Correctional Officer enforces rules and regulations in a prison, jail or other holding facility. Presides over prisoners awaiting trial or those who have been convicted of a crime. Being a Correctional Officer oversees prisoner conduct and safety. Supervises prisoners during meals, recreation, work and other daily activities. Additionally, Correctional Officer documents violations and takes appropriate disciplinary actions. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. The Correctional Officer possesses a moderate understanding of general aspects of the job. Works under the close direction of senior personnel in the functional area. FEW OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER:
Ø Supervise residents within the housing units to maintain the safety and security of the facility.
Ø Prepares reports including, bookings, releases, fingerprinting, and Booking photos. Assists in the maintenance of various records and information reporting materials and databases.
Ø Supervises residents on general work details inside or outside of correction center. Supervise and instruct residents in housekeeping and sanitation ensuring their living areas are held to departmental standards.
Ø -- Maintain a periodic patrol either inside or outside the institution to ensure the security and integrity of the institution. Monitor, supervise and screen visitor traffic, observe traffic in and around the facility.
Ø Instruct residents and maintain control in areas such as the food service area, gym, etc. Observe for signs of disorder or tension and report such observations to a higher authority; advise/refer residents to proper departments for counseling services.
Ø Maintain a record of equipment, supplies and other items; maintain and demonstrate proficiency in the use and care, restraint methods and equipment and emergency measures; maintain knowledge of communication and other electronic equipment; instruct residents in the proper care and use of institutional equipment.
Ø Be familiar with emergency responsibilities and evacuation procedures to maintain safety for the residents, staff and the community.
Ø Perform Post Order duties as specified in the DWCRC Policy and Procedure Manual.
Ø Perform other duties as assigned.
