Purpose Statement
The ELA Curriculum Specialist is responsible for supporting 7-12 ELA program initiatives, to include developing and revising curriculum and assessments and facilitating curriculum adoptions and implementation. The Specialist is also responsible for coaching, supporting, and guiding teachers in best practices for ELA instruction. The position provides professional development through planned learning sessions and through the job-embedded practices of planning, modeling, and coaching teachers.
The Specialist reports to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
Essential Functions
Leads the development and implementation of 7-12 ELA curriculum and assessments.
Provides instructional support to ELA teachers for successful student achievement in math.
Provides support to teachers and schools, including observing ELA instruction, planning for instruction, modeling or co-teaching, consulting, reflecting, and offering feedback to teachers as needed.
Assists teachers with classroom organization, materials procurement, and learning activities that support learning targets and objectives.
Collaborates regularly with supervisor, building administrators, other content curriculum specialists, and department leaders to address areas of greatest need, including development of curriculum and updating existing curriculum.
Analyzes data to determine benchmarks, establish goals, and monitor improvement in ELA learning across the district and in schools. Develops concrete steps to address identified needs.
Provides developmental assistance and resources for teachers to meet the varied learning needs of students.
Supports the work of content teams by attending, participating, and facilitating professional learning communities.
Plans and facilitates Instructional Division Leader (I.D.L.) meetings and district-wide professional development to ensure district curricular and instructional consistency.
Attends professional development and activities to improve knowledge of content, instructional strategies, coaching skills, and adult learning theory.
Informs staff of emerging ELA instruction and learning.
Facilitates processes for selecting and implementing curriculum resource adoptions and supplementary materials.
Works with the Arizona Department of Education, other district curriculum specialists, and experts in the field to keep PVSchools at the forefront of math instruction, curriculum alignment with standards, and assessment.
