Being a Curriculum Specialist consults with subject matter experts to define learning objectives and to design appropriate course content and training curriculum. Develops curricula supporting defined competency models or skill frameworks. Additionally, Curriculum Specialist writes and edits outlines, syllabus, lecture notes, and materials for in-person or online courses and self-study programs. Evaluates the software or collaboration tools to be selected for training. Establishes metrics to use to evaluate training effectiveness. May collaborate with vendors that provide training materials or conduct training. May coach trainers. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager. The Curriculum Specialist occasionally directed in several aspects of the work. Gaining exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function.     SUPERVISORS:  Director of Professional Development and Elementary Leadership 

    and the Director of Curriculum and Student Learning

     

    JOB SUMMARY:  The Professional Development & Curriculum Coordinator provides leadership, guidance, and support for creating and maintaining a district-wide culture of professional growth and continuous improvement among teachers and administrators. This position provides support and coaching for New Teacher Mentoring and Induction programs, effective instructional practices and leadership for administrators and teacher leaders, recruiting and mentoring in-house National Board Certified Teacher candidates, district inservice days, and staff development offerings. This position is responsible for assisting building administrators and instructional teams in analyzing student data and planning for the adjustment of instruction. The position also works collaboratively with others in the Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment department to plan, prepare, and facilitate professional learning as identified through the Continuous Improvement Process, Equity Action Plan, or Strategic Plan. 

     

    The Professional Development & Curriculum Coordinator provides leadership and vision in the ongoing planning, implementation, development, direction, review, and evaluation of the district’s curriculum and instructional services, federal programs, assessment, research, and evaluation services. The Professional Development & Curriculum Coordinator ensures that the district/school education objectives align with state frameworks and instructional practices. 

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. 

     

    • Under the direction of the Director of Curriculum and Student Learning and the Director of Professional Development and Elementary Leadership, plan, implement, facilitate, and evaluate professional development activities and events, including but not limited to workshops, district inservice days, conferences, and the Professional Development Offerings Booklet.
    • Provide leadership for teacher implementation of district-wide effective instructional practices, data analysis, and targeting instruction to meet the needs of individuals and student groups.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum and Student Learning and the Director of Professional Development and Elementary Leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate professional learning opportunities for all USD116 employees.
    • Provide leadership and support for the Tier One Intensive Instruction program to provide job-embedded professional development related to effective teaching and co-teaching practices.
    • Formally and routinely check in with all novice teachers about their needs and concerns to provide an extra layer of support throughout the year.
    • Recruit and mentor in-house National Board Teacher Certification (NBTC) candidates.
    • Coordinate with the Director of Curriculum and Student Learning and the Director of Professional Development and Elementary Leadership to plan, implement, and evaluate the New Teacher Mentoring Program, including New Teacher Orientation, Induction, Novice Workshops, and professional development offerings.
    • Collect and analyze teacher data from professional development activities, support the district's continuous improvement plan development, and monitor progress.
    • Work as part of a district improvement team to ensure the implementation of district initiatives as part of district continuous improvement.
    • Lead professional development for staff related to continuous improvement including, but not limited to, English Language Arts & Spanish Language Arts curricula, Illustrative Math, the Danielson Framework for Teaching, classroom walkthroughs, effective instructional strategies, and instructional leadership.
    • Plan and prepare materials and resources for professional development workshops, including booklets, flyers, and workshop folders.
    • Manage and monitor curriculum materials and inventory including, sorting, arranging materials, delivery of material items.  
    • Assist in the planning and facilitating the district’s annual Young Authors’ Celebration.
    • Coordinate set-up of facilities for professional development activities and special events.
    • Coordinate professional development with external partners to successfully train staff on refining or adding new resources.
    • Collaborate with teaching staff to support all aspects of district instructional and curriculum integration of technology.
    • Support District goals pertaining to continuous improvement in the areas of student learning and assessment (both District and school plans).
    • Support the Director of Curriculum and Student Learning and the Director of Professional Development and Elementary Leadership with the administration and analysis of all state and benchmark assessments within the district, including the creation of an annual district-wide assessment calendar.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum and Student Learning and the Director of Professional Development and Elementary Leadership to prepare reports and presentations on academic and social-emotional data.
    • Collaborate with curriculum committees to make recommendations pertaining to curriculum programs and implementation of new instructional resources.
    • Assist in providing direction for the development, revision, and continuous improvement of district instructional practices across the curriculum
    • Coordinates with specialists (i.e., general education teachers, Tier One Interventionists, administrators) on program and curriculum development.
    • Serve as a liaison with the Chamber of Commerce to coordinate iRead and iCount in kindergarten and first grades. 
    • Collaborate with the Mentoring Coordinator on recruitment of volunteers for iRead/iCount. 
    • Prepare and disperse materials needed for each session of iRead/iCount
    • Work as part of a team to plan and prepare for all district in-service activities.
    • Communicate positively and clearly with a wide variety of administrators, teachers, Central Office personnel, and community members.
    • Responds professionally to conflict
    • Treats people respectfully, irrespective of race, gender, or socio-economic background.
    • Uses discretion in handling confidential information and difficult situations.
    • Perform all other duties as necessary to the position and such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent of Schools, Assistant Superintendents, the Director of Curriculum and Student Learning, or Director of Professional Development and Elementary Leadership.

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

     

    EDUCATION

    • Preferred Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with training in administration, curriculum development and instruction, and/or professional learning. Equivalent experience in educational leadership will be considered to meet this requirement. 
    • National Board Certified Teacher preferred, but not required

     

    EXPERIENCE

    • Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience 
    • Knowledge of and experience with best practices EC-12 education
    • Strong work ethic as a member of a team
    • Ability to work independently, multi-task, and meet deadlines
    • Proven experience as a collaborative leader and motivator who possesses excellent interpersonal and communication skills
    • Familiarity with professional development initiatives such as: 
      • New Teacher Induction and Mentoring
      • District Institute Days 
      • Optional professional development offerings 
    • Professional development facilitation experience preferred
    • Ability to handle multiple major projects at once

     

    LICENSES/CREDENTIAL: Current Illinois Professional Educator License 

     

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  185 days with 20 additional days to be used as needed.  Additional days beyond the teachers’ calendar are paid per diem. 

     

    START:  August 13, 2024, with some additional days before the start of the school year for new teacher training and orientation

     

    EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.

     

    NOTE: This is a position within the collective bargaining unit and is not an administrative position.
