Cytotechnologist examines cells of the cytoplasm and nucleus to determine pathological conditions. Separates sediment and cells from blood serum and categorizes slides and records classification. Being a Cytotechnologist receives and prepares specimens for analysis. Detects abnormalities and communicates to pathologist to arrive at a final diagnosis and report. Additionally, Cytotechnologist requires a bachelor's degree. Requires graduation from an approved school of cytotechnology and American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) or I.C.A. registration. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Cytotechnologist's years of experience requirement may be unspecified. Under the direction of the Director of Laboratory Services, the Cytotechnologist will perform microscopic evaluations of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. The Cytotechnologist will also assist on FNA procedures in radiology, processing both gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, participates in continuing educations and proficiency testing. The Cytotechnologist will evaluate and identify all pathologic cells and organisms to distinguish between normal, abnormal, and malignant cells.
The Cytotechnologist must have a Bachelor’s degree from a program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Scientists (NAACLS) or the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP). The Cytotechnologist must also have current CT(ASCP) certification.
