    This position may be filled in the Lakewood, CO duty location or any area within the Fish & Wildlife Service Region 6; this includes the following states Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.     As a Architect your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Prepares complete solicitation packages (e.g., statement of work, statement of objectives, statement of requirements and concept drawings with design guidelines for projects to be designed by A-E services or design-build contractor. Incumbent provides architectural review of designs for various types of structures to be rehabilitated and/or constructed on Service lands and recommends approval, disapproval, or modification.
    • Determines the appropriate solution for remediation and/or selects proposed sites for the project and evaluates the adequacy with regard to topography, subsurface conditions, utilities, development costs, and other factors.
    • Develop detailed cost estimates for the materials and construction of building projects. Responsible for the general review and coordination of items and work prepared by others assigned to assist the architect on the project.

    Qualifications

    In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Basic Requirement and Minimum Qualification.

    Basic Requirement:
    • A degree in architecture; or related field that included 60 semester hours of course work in architecture or related disciplines of which at least (1) 30 semester hours were in architectural design, and (2) 6 semester hours were in each of the following: structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems. OR
    A combination of education and experience
    • - college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the arts and sciences underlying professional architecture, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the architectural principles, methods, and techniques and their applications to the design and construction or improvement of buildings. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by at least one of the following: 1. Related Curriculum: Degree in architectural engineering may be accepted as satisfying in full the basic requirements, provided the completed course work in architectural engineering provided knowledge, skills, and abilities substantially equivalent to those provided in the courses specified above. The curriculum for a degree in either architecture or architectural engineering covers function, esthetics, site, structure, economics, mechanical-electrical, and other engineering problems related to the design and construction of buildings primarily (but not exclusively) intended to house human activities. The courses required for a degree in architecture generally place emphasis upon planning, esthetics, and materials and methods of construction, while the courses for an architectural engineering degree place equal or greater weight on the technical engineering aspects such as structural systems, mechanical systems, and the properties of materials. Because of this difference in emphasis, persons with degrees in architecture may have a preference for work assignments that offer greater opportunities for them to express their artistic and creative abilities. As a result, they may be more concerned with planning and design aspects of architecture, and persons with degrees in architectural engineering may be more engaged in aspects emphasizing technical engineering considerations. OR
    • An applicant lacking a degree in architecture must have had l year of experience in an architect's office or in architectural work for each year short of graduation from a program of study in architecture. In the absence of college courses, 5 years of such experience is required. This experience must have demonstrated that the applicant has acquired a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture.

    Minimum Qualification GS-12

    One year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility equivalent to grade GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience MUST include ALL of the following: 1. Working with Computer Aided Design (CAD) software; 2. Working with an architectural engineering firm to approve designs; 3. Determining in consultation with customers if design will fulfill functionality within budget requirements; and 4. Performing construction observation by monitoring construction methods and progress.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units.     GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
