Marine Data Technician - Year Round
  • Hurricane Island Center
  • Rockland, ME FULL_TIME
  • The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership (Hurricane Island) is a transformative learning and research community on Hurricane Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine. Our mission is to integrate scientific research and education on a Maine coastal island to develop leaders prepared to address environmental issues in a rapidly changing world. Our vision is a network of community leaders solving environmental problems creatively, scientifically, and collaboratively for the Gulf of Maine and beyond. Our research agenda focuses on answering local high priority questions and increasing scientific capacity regionally. We pursue initiatives through the scientific process and believe the knowledge gained will motivate communities of people to take action.

    Position Description

Hurricane Island is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Marine Data Technician to join our team for a two-year position funded by the Pen Bay Marine Data Project. This individual will play a crucial role in supporting the collection, management, and analysis of real-time marine data, as well as leading comprehensive intertidal flora and fauna surveys. Working closely with project leaders, research scientists, and partner organizations, the successful candidate will ensure the accurate and efficient operation of data collection buoys while overseeing intertidal monitoring activities in Penobscot Bay, Maine.

This position reports directly to the Science & Research Director and is based out of Rockland, Maine. While the position will not mandate residency on Hurricane Island, there is an expectation for the Marine Data Technician to be regularly present on the island during the field season (April-October) and as needed to meet project goals and timelines. This position is a full-time, year-round position complete with a competitive salary (DOE) and benefits package.

This is a unique opportunity to play a leadership role in advancing our understanding of climate-related changes in the Gulf of Maine, while gaining valuable experience in data management, analysis, and field research. The Marine Data Technician will contribute significantly to our efforts to monitor and protect the marine ecosystems of Penobscot Bay, fostering informed decision-making and environmental stewardship for future generations.

    • Address any technical issues or malfunctions promptly to minimize data downtime.

    Data Collection and Management

    • Monitor and manage data streams from buoys, ensuring continuous collection of essential parameters such as pH/ORP, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, salinity, total algae, and temperature.
    • Organize and archive collected data in compliance with project protocols and standards.
    • Collaborate with project leaders and research scientists to develop efficient data management workflows and protocols.

    Intertidal Monitoring Lead

    • Coordinate fieldwork schedules, logistics, and equipment for survey activities.
    • Train and supervise field assistants and interns participating in intertidal surveys.
    • Ensure adherence to established protocols and standards for data collection and analysis.

    Analysis and Reporting

    • Assist in data analysis and interpretation, including basic statistical analysis and visualization.
    • Prepare regular reports and summaries of collected data for internal and external stakeholders.
    • Contribute to scientific publications and presentations based on project findings.

    Collaboration and Communication

    • Work closely with project leaders, research scientists, and partner organizations to ensure effective coordination and communication.
    • Participate in project meetings, workshops, and conferences to share findings and collaborate with the broader scientific community.
    • Engage with local communities and stakeholders to disseminate project updates and findings in accessible formats.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to and build initiatives that support inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility to research and education for all including racial and ethnic minority groups, English language learners, urban youth, low-income communities, immigrant communities, LGBTQ communities, people with special needs, and other groups that are underrepresented in the scientific fields.

    Support of Other Research Projects

As a part of the Hurricane Island Research Team, the Marine Data Technician will contribute to other research projects within the field of marine ecology. Common expectations for a research technician in this capacity include:

    • Assisting with data collection, analysis, and reporting.
    • Conducting fieldwork, such as ecological surveys and sample collection.
    • Assisting on Hurricane’s 3.2 acre experimental aquaculture lease site as needed, including cleaning and restocking gear, setting up experimental projects, and data collection
    • Contributing to the overall success of research projects through teamwork and dedication.

When on Island, participate as a full member of Hurricane’s intentional community, including following and enforcing campus policies and community expectations, welcoming visitors to the island and communicating about Hurricane’s mission and work, participating in community tasks including daily and weekly chores, performing other duties relating to the organization’s goals and mission as required.

Bangor is located at 44°48′N 68°48′W / 44.8°N 68.8°W / 44.8; -68.8. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.59 square miles (89.59 km2), of which 34.26 square miles (88.73 km2) is land and 0.33 square miles (0.85 km2) is water. A potential advantage that has always eluded exploitation is the city's location between the port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the rest of Canada (as well as New York). As early as the 1870s, the city promoted a Halifax-to-New York railroad, via Bangor, as the quickest connection between North America and Europe (when combin...
