    Position Description

    The Product Scientist is responsible for designing and administer tests, collecting and analyzing data, communication of performance to internal and external customers. The individual will report to the Director of Product Development and will primarily work with the Product Development, Formula Implementation, and Customer Data teams. They will also be expected to interact with our Commercial team and our customers. Occasionally the individual may be asked to conduct testing on behalf of other departments such as Quality or Formula Optimization. This role will support Refresco’s Product Development through product evaluations and sensory testing.

    Essential Functions:

    • Gain a complete knowledge of Refresco’s current shelf life process and most commonly used sensory tests.
    • Become a SIMS software expert.
    • Harbor strong communication skills to both internal and external customers – be able to communicate needs, timelines, and results effectively.
    • In addition to the role of Product Performance Scientist the individual will also be expected to continue to perform any of the duties of a Product Development Lab Technician II as needed.
    • Result Accuracy – Ensure that all reported testing results are documented accurately.
    • Attitude – Positive attitude that invites communications and feedback
    • Initiative – Take on tasks and projects that are not in the “norm” work flow.

    • Problem solving and decision-making skills.
    • Modernization of Refresco’s protocols for validation or determination of shelf life on new development, package changes, or customer requests to extend past our “standard” shelf life.
    • Sensory Testing: Must be able to determine the appropriate test methodology for different types of projects, design and administer testing and report results.
    • Sensory Training: Develop a regular cycle of training sessions for Product Development, our Taste Panel and our wider group of participants in taste tests.

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Chemistry, Food Science, Biology, or other comparable science.
    • Minimum 1 year related experience/training or an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
    • Experience in FDA regulated industry is preferred.
    • Must have good written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, be well organized, very detail-oriented and be able to work on several projects at one time.
    • Must be computer proficient in Adobe, Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and the internet.
    • Working knowledge of SAP desired.
    • Working knowledge of basic sensory testing methods desired.
    • Demonstrate initiative and creativity.
    • Ability to be persuasive and assertive while also being collaborative.

    Required Skills and Competencies:

    • Detail Oriented – Accuracy of data and calculations generated.
    • Computer Skills – SIMS software expert, document creation and storage, and formula management.
    • Documentation – Keep organized records of all evaluations and qualifications.
    • Mathematics – Formula and calculation validation, statistical analysis.
    • Technical writing skills – Must be able to communicate methodology, data and results effectively to technical and non-technical customers.
    • Ability to learn independently and apply learnings to Refresco’s products and processes.
    • Ability to work cross-functionally.
    • Demonstrate Strategic and Idea Leadership.
    • Ability to handle complexity, multiple projects and work under quick timelines.
    • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
