Dean of Communications manages administrative functions of the college of communications. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Communications leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Communications requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Communications manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Communications typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Dean assists the Building Principal in the daily functions that are necessary to provide a positive environment for students and staff. The responsibilities include collaborating with the high school administrators on issues related to the high school, working with teachers on issues related to student behavior and student performance in class, supervising security staff, acting as a liaison between the Espanola School District, the community and other school districts.

      

    Reporting Relationship:

    The Dean reports to the Building Principal and is responsible to that person for the proper interpretation and performance of the duties and responsibilities of the position.

     

    Education/Training/Experience

    • Basic computer skills for the software in use.
    • Demonstrate positive and effective working relationships with students, staff, other administrators, parents and the community.
    • Preferred Level III Admin License

     

    Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

    • Know, interpret and follow school policy.
    • Apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
    • Diffuse difficult situations.
    • Demonstrate ability to operate a computer and necessary software.
    • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, administrators, parents and the community.
    • Maintain professional composure while dealing with a variety of personalities and situations.
    • Serve as public relations contact person.
    • Show initiative and function as a self-starter.
    • Communicate clearly and concisely in a business-like manner.
    • Understand different levels of communication with students, staff, administrators, parents and the community.

     

     

     

    Resources Used in Performing Job Include (but are not limited to): 

    Standard office equipment and vehicle for district travel. A district car may be used or if the employee uses his/her own vehicle mileage reimbursement is available.

    Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

    Regularly required to walk, talk and listen.   Frequently is required to stand and sit. Required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception. Light lifting at times.

     

    Environmental Conditions

    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
    • Collaborative work in a fast-paced environment interacting with students, staff, administrators, parents and the community with multiple requests and concerns.
    • Support and communicate with other administrators and staff.
    • Respond in emergency situations.

     

    Essential Job Functions:

    1. General Administration
    2. Assist the building Principal in establishing a positive environment for achieving educational outcomes.
    3. Serve as a member of various building teams and act as liaison.
    4. Assist in the development and implementation of operational guidelines in the areas of building organization, student conduct, and community involvement, security of the school facility,
    5. Maintain building and occupant safety and security.
    6. Support in school readiness and academics, relationship building skills, community school relationships, school re-entry programs and transition services for justice involving youth, reducing use of exclusionary discipline, suicide and violence prevention, crisis management and conflict resolution and preventing use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes.
    7. Assumes other duties as assigned by the Principal.
    8. Student Relations
    9. Establish and maintain a positive school climate for students.
    10. Advocate for equal educational opportunity for all students.
    11. Direct the reporting and monitoring of student attendance.
    12. Administer student discipline policies within district guidelines.
    13. Establish safety and emergency procedures for the high school and district
    14. Teacher Relations
    15. Assist teachers with student issues related to classroom matters.

     

    Personal Accountability:

    • Demonstrates reliability as evidenced by attendance records and punctuality.
    • Properly notifies supervisor and/or designee of absences or tardiness.
    • Begins and completes work within the allotted time.
    • Consistently appears in attire appropriate to the work environment.
    • Demonstrates skill in the use of equipment including its capabilities, limitations and appropriate/special application,
    • Protects the District’s resources through appropriate and careful use of supplies and equipment.
    • Utilizes appropriate body mechanics to aid in the prevention of muscle strain/injury.
