Dean of Engineering manages administrative functions of the college of engineering. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Engineering leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Engineering requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Engineering manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Engineering typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Position: Reporting directly to the Provost, and supported by an Assistant Dean, the Dean provides academic leadership and administrative oversight for the School of Arts and Sciences. Responsibilities include oversight of the academic quality of the programs and courses offered through the School of Arts and Sciences; leadership for the initiation, development, implementation, and evaluation of programs within the School; and the recruitment, selection, and evaluation of all faculty and instructional support staff for reappointment, tenure, promotion, and discretionary salary adjustments. In addition to these responsibilities, the Dean is primarily responsible for the development and growth of the faculty with respect to teaching, scholarship, and service. The Dean is a member of the Deans' Council and plays a critical role in advancing the College's strategic plan. Working closely with all members of the College community, the Dean is the official channel of communication regarding matters relevant to the School of Arts and Sciences. With more than 13 Departments including ten degree-granting programs and one certificate program, the School of Arts and Sciences is considered the most comprehensive of the four schools on the campus.     Job Requirements:


    Required Qualifications include:

    • A Ph.D. in one of the Arts and Sciences disciplines from a regionally accredited institution, a record of scholarly publications, and professional eligibility for tenure at the full professor level is required.
    • Progressive administrative experience in the role of academic department chair, assistant dean, associate dean, or a position that offered similar leadership opportunity and professional growth is required.
    • Additional required qualifications include the ability to relate to and work with students in various aspects of their academic pursuits; proven ability to provide program leadership and development; experience in shared governance; interpersonal, management, and conflict resolution skills; demonstrated success working with a team to attain institutional goals; ability to make decisions in a consultative and informed manner; ability to establish organizational priorities and make difficult choices among competing demands; and excellent written and oral communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications include:

    • Experience in the following areas: public system of higher education; creating programs/policies for student recruitment/retention; assessment/accreditation of academic programs/institutions; and teaching in a four-year institution.
    • Experience working with diverse populations is also strongly preferred.
