Dean of Engineering manages administrative functions of the college of engineering. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Engineering leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Engineering requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. The Dean of Engineering manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Engineering typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     Located in Greater Boston, MassBay is a comprehensive, open-access community college offering associate degrees and certificate programs on three campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland, Massachusetts.

    Position Summary:

    The ideal candidate will join a vibrant and inclusive educational community and have a desire and ability to work with a diverse population.

    The Dean of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Division provides leadership, vision, and assessment of faculty and program offerings within the Division across the College’s campuses and satellite locations. Departments within the STEM division are Biotechnology, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Science. The STEM division also houses MassBay’s Center for Cybersecurity Education, the Center for Therapeutics and Genomics Training, and the Center for Biomanufacturing Education and Workforce Development.

    Key Responsibilities and Duties:

    • Provide academic and administrative leadership to the Division to achieve academic excellence;
    • Develop, recommend, and monitor the Division budgets;
    • Administer applicable collective bargaining agreements;
    • Supervise course scheduling, faculty assignments, location, and instructional delivery for all credit courses in the division at all campuses;
    • Make recommendations for appointment, promotion, tenure, reappointment, sabbatical leave, and other personnel actions within the Division;
    • Promote and support the professional development of divisional faculty and staff;
    • Address faculty, staff, and student concerns and grievances within the division;
    • Provide leadership in the development, review, revision of divisional curriculum at the course and program level;
    • Develop and foster collaborations and partnerships with business and industry, government agencies, non-profit and community-based organizational representatives;
    • Share responsibility with other College administrators in advancing and monitoring student job and career placement and college transfer opportunities;
    • Collaborate with other College administrators for the achievement of enrollment and student success goals, and for the support processes for incoming and returning students;
    • Oversee the completion of program reviews for divisional academic programs;
    • Ensure that all programs have active and appropriately-constituted advisory boards;
    • Participate in outreach initiatives for academic affairs, including K-12, Early College, dual enrollment, and four-year college and university articulations;
    • Participate in the development and implementation of grants to support academic initiatives;
    • Other duties as assigned by the Provost/Chief Academic Officer.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in a STEM discipline taught within the Division or in Higher Education;
    • Four to seven years of full-time college-level teaching experience in a discipline taught within the division;
    • Leadership experience in higher education; administrative service as a department chair, program director or other administrative position, preferred;
    • A demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the values, goals, and accountabilities of the Bureau of Higher Education’s vision for public higher education in Massachusetts;
    • Demonstrated commitment to the philosophy of the community college, to broad-based institutional planning, to shared governance, and to student development and success;
    • A demonstrated ability to build a culture of cohesion, dialog, civility, and academic excellence;
    • Excellent writing and oral communication skills;
    • Ability to use information technology effectively;
    • Knowledge of state-of-the-art teaching and learning techniques, including technological applications and distance learning;
    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body;
    • Proven commitment to high academic standards and integrity;
    • Collective bargaining experience.


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Ph.D. in a STEM field taught within the Division or Higher Education preferred;
    • Sensitivity and commitment to the goals of Affirmative Action and workforce diversity;
    • Experience working in a diverse environment;
    • Demonstrated commitment to working with underserved students.

    Salary Range:
    $115,000.00 - 130,000.00 Annual Salary
