Dean of Fine Arts manages administrative functions of the college of fine arts. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting.   • TAPA: Trinity Academy for the Performing Arts, an academically rigorous public charter school for the arts, seeks a Dean of Students to lead a positive, productive, safe, and inclusive school culture rooted in restorative practices and the principles of Kingian nonviolence. The Dean of Students is responsible for implementing culturally responsive approaches to conflict resolution, student advocacy, and disciplinary procedures. Additionally, the Dean of Students is in charge of attendance management strategies, working together with our students and families to maintain consistently high levels of student attendance. TAPA’s anti-oppression creative community is enriched by the cultural, religious, racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity of our neurodiverse families, students, and employees. Demographically, nearly all members of the TAPA student body are people of color, predominantly Latinx, with most students speaking both English and Spanish in their homes. A significant portion of TAPA’s student body identifies as members of the LGBTQ community. It is an organizational priority for TAPA to hire staff members who have cultural commonalities with our students and families. The Dean of Students is an essential member of the Student Supports Team and the school Leadership Team, and reports directly to the Head of School. Responsibilities:
    1. Creates a safe and positive climate and learning environment at TAPA by: 
      • Developing and communicating high and clear expectations for student behavior
      • Overseeing and streamlining disciplinary procedures, ensuring they are effective and culturally responsive to the needs our student body.
      • Working collaboratively with teachers and administrators to address behavioral issues with cultural sensitivity and inclusivity.
      • Collaborating closely with the special education team and social work team to provide support in the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process.
      • Assist in developing and implementing strategies to address the unique needs of students, ensuring an inclusive and equitable learning environment.
    2. Restorative Practices Leadership:
      • Creates and implements school-wide restorative policies, guidelines, practices and procedures pertaining to student behavior and attendance.
      • Champion the implementation and integration of restorative practices, ensuring cultural responsiveness for our diverse student population, by providing training and on-the-ground support to staff and faculty
    3. Conflict Resolution and Mediation:
      • Develop and maintain a comprehensive conflict resolution program.
      • Act as a culturally competent mediator in student conflicts, recognizing and respecting the diverse voices of our students.
    4. Student Advocacy:
      • Run a rigorous student government program to center loud and proud student voice in schoolwide decision making, including supporting elected students in their role as liaisons to the TAPA Board of Directors.
    5. Attendance Management:
      • Develop and implement strategies to improve student attendance and maintain high rates of daily attendance.
      • Collaborate with teachers, students, families, local agencies and support staff to identify and address barriers to attendance..
      • When necessary, the Dean of Students is responsible for initiating and overseeing the Truancy process: i.e - tracking absences, contacting families, having initial meetings with families about attendance, though TAPA strives to achieve high daily attendance without the involvement of the court system whenever possible.
    6. Family Engagement:
      • Foster positive relationships with parents and other family members to build support around students who are struggling academically or socially.
      • Communicate with parents whose students are absent from school each time an absence occurs.
      • Organize workshops and events that address attendance challenges and promote the value of regular school attendance.
    7. Training and Professional Development:
      • Coordinate training sessions for staff in the consistent and effective implementation of restorative practices and Kingian nonviolence throughout the school community.
      • Stay informed about the latest developments in culturally responsive education and attendance management, sharing insights with the school community.
    8. Facilitating the TAPA Summer Skills program for 6 weeks each summer, with the support of other TAPA school and leadership staff
    9. Other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications:
    1. Degree in education, counseling, or a related field; experience will be considered in place of an advanced degree for highly qualified candidates
    2. Training in implementing restorative practices and Kingian nonviolence principles in public schools with a focus on cultural responsiveness.
    3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to speak comfortably with students, parents, and staff, including a a demonstrated understanding of the needs of MLL, LGBTQ , and economically disadvantaged students.
    4. Knowledge of educational law and regulations related to student discipline and attendance.
    5. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders in an urban educational setting.
    6. A commitment to, and understanding of, Urban Education.
    7. A Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
    8. Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse perspectives that students and staff bring to their work, including those of academic, socioeconomic, culture, race and ethnicity, ability, gender, sexuality, and intersectional identities
    9. Proven ability to form working partnerships with parents, social service agencies, students, and community members
    Preferred Qualifications
    1. Five year's experience working in an urban school environment and/or a lived experience of being educated through an urban schooling environment.
    2. Proficiency in conversational Spanish is strongly preferred.
    3. Knowledge and participation in the Rhode Island Arts community.
