    Location: Fayette, IA

    Position Summary
    The Assistant Dean of Students is a member of the Student Life leadership team and reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Student Life. The Assistant Dean provides overall vision, leadership, and administrative direction to the residential experience for approximately 400 students residing on the Fayette campus and leads programmatic efforts to support the student experience with a focus on building community and fostering a sense of belonging for all students. Supervising one Resident Area Coordinator (RAC), one Graduate Assistant for Residence Life, one Graduate Assistant for Student Engagement, 17 Resident Assistants (RA’s), and a number of work-study students, the Assistant Dean is responsible for the administration of the residence life system, conduct, and student activities.

    Position Responsibilities
    Student Engagement & Leadership
    • Collaborate across departments and within the community to develop and implement strategies for increasing student involvement and engagement in the University community and increase a sense of belonging. Plan, organize, implement, track and evaluate the success of student programming and engagement.
    • Maintain a visible presence with students and serve as the primary contact with student organizations.
    • Implement a comprehensive strategy for the engagement of underrepresented and non-traditional students using innovative and multimodal approaches. Develop programs to encourage commuter and residential student involvement and participation in campus life. Provide opportunities for online and center student participation.
    • Advise the Assistant Vice President and other campus partners on matters concerning students, student organizations, student services and programs, policy development, priorities and resource allocation, and design of a safe, secure, accessible, and inclusive environment
    • Identify and organize leadership development opportunities for students.
    • Student support responsibilities include mentoring, training, advising and/or supervising students and student groups, as well as helping students solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges and/or crises.
    • Identify and manage multimodal communications to increase student awareness of events and opportunities. Communicate calendar of events to key members of the UIU and local community.
    • Advise several campus groups including the Peacock Entertainment Crew and Greek Life.
    Residence Life & Conduct
    • Maintain residential environment that is safe, secure, healthy, positive and engaging and enhances student development and learning.
    • Oversee the community, programming, and initiatives within the residence halls.
    • Provide direction, oversight, training and professional development for the live-in Residence Area Coordinator (RAC), Graduate Assistant, and the Resident Assistants (RA). Coordinate and assign work load, programming and specific duties to the Residence Area Coordinator and Graduate Assistants. The residence life team coordinates and manages housing selection, RA selection, and communication with incoming and returning students.
    • Serve as Campus Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
    • Manage the completion and submission of the University’s Annual Security Report for all UIU locations.
    • Administer and coordinate student conduct procedures and policies, to include: coordinating the investigation, student disciplinary actions, conducting hearings, responding to crises, providing guidance and training, administering interventions, administering sanctions, issuing no-contact orders, making appropriate referrals, inputting and maintaining data in the University's student conduct tracking system, and other related activities.
    • Work closely and communicate regularly with campus safety, which is served by the Fayette Police Department.
    • Oversee after-hours on-call (sharing the rotation with the RAC, GA for Residence Life, and GA for Student Engagement) operational assistance, providing on-call assistance as needed; work directly with campus safety, counseling, and facilities on appropriate follow-up.
    Administration
    • Budget oversight. Planning, creation, and management of budgets (Residence Life, Student Activities, Student Leadership, Civic Engagement, Orientation and Outdoor Pursuits) including compiling past expenditures and estimating future costs.
    • Track, asses, and evaluate student engagement at events and residence life programs to include in annual reporting, budget projection, and planning for future events.
    • Connect with outside agencies, community liaisons, and resources for collaboration and support in implementation of programs and events both in residence life and student activities.
    • Build positive relationships with students, staff, faculty and local law enforcement officials and help foster positive relationships and support between these groups.
    • Collaborate and communicate regularly with Facilities and campus safety to ensure issues are averted and student concerns are addressed in a timely and positive manner.
    • Manage the annual review and update of the student code of conduct, conduct policies and trainings, club and organization handbook, residential policies and community standards, and residence life documents.
    • Serve on several committees including Emergency Preparedness, Behavioral Intervention Team, Fayette Chamber of Commerce, Homecoming, University Policy and Peacock Experience.

    Required Qualifications
    • Master’s degree with three to five years of progressive leadership experience in a higher education setting.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
    • Experience supervising professional and student staff.
    • This position is required to live in Fayette, Iowa with the option of free housing on campus.
    • The on-call rotation requires occasional night and weekend hours; including some holidays.
    • Must be eligible for and obtain a Class D Driver's License.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Emergency response experience.
    • Knowledge of Jenzabar EX software.
    • Knowledge of computer software applications specifically Google Suite and Microsoft Office programs; Hometown ticketing; Jenzabar; ability to learn and develop competency in programming/calendar scheduling within operational systems.
    • Experience developing residence hall communities, providing educational and personal support for students, responding to student concerns and behaviors, and participating in department initiatives and campus life.
