Dean of Nursing manages administrative functions of the college of nursing. Develops college strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting. Being a Dean of Nursing leads college in fundraising and cultivating relationships with donors. Provides senior level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty development and performance appraisals, budget and finance, and facilities planning and management. Additionally, Dean of Nursing requires an advanced degree. Typically reports to top management. Requires certification as a registered nurse. The Dean of Nursing manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Nursing typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     The Dean of Nursing & Nurse Administrator serves as the nurse administrator for the nursing program at their campus and is responsible for leading, implementing, and maintaining learning and teaching strategies and initiatives that reflect the vision and direction of the School of Nursing. This includes hiring, management and development of campus nursing Associate Deans and faculty and accountability for faculty management and the student academic experience. This role works collaboratively with campus and School of Nursing leadership, staff, and students to improve learning outcomes and ensure campuses meet and maintain Board of Nursing regulations and accreditation standards.

    Responsibilities:

    • Directly support the mission and purpose of the governing organization and the mission and purpose of a nursing education unit in the achievement of a nursing program’s end-of-program student learning outcomes and program outcomes.
    • Recruit, supervise, develop, and direct a professional staff, including full-time and adjunct faculty, to ensure curricula are current and consistently delivered in an environment and manner conducive to learning in accordance with University and School of Nursing objectives.
    • Conduct faculty observations and coaching, mentoring, and evaluating faculty members and staff.
    • Oversee on-boarding and nursing orientation of new faculty to all learning environments.
    • Organize and schedule faculty and staff work assignments.
    • Attend campus meetings, faculty meetings, and other meetings as designated, including but not limited to pinning ceremonies, University graduations, community events, programmatic meetings, committee meetings.
    • Maintain a professional image, attitude, work area, and communication style at all times; exhibit professional behavior, language, communication, demeanor and dress at all times.
    • Facilitate positive communication and develops collegial relationships with students, faculty, staff, and clinical partners to promote positive learning environments.
    • Maintain high performance standards for self that support the overall strategic plan and vision of the School of Nursing and University and holds self-accountable for achieving results.
    • Demonstrate strict adherence to all institutional, governmental, and accreditation policies, regulations, and codes of conduct at all times.
    • Respond in a timely and appropriate manner to all nursing students, faculty, and staff requests for information and/or guidance.
    • Establish and maintain clinical sites; assesses clinical site satisfaction and addresses opportunities for improvement.
    • Establish and maintain advisory boards composed of clinical partners and other community leaders.
    • Ensure nursing program operations are conducted in compliance with applicable state, federal, and local laws; ensure regulations and ordinances are within standards of accreditation.
    • In summary be responsible for all personnel matters, student matters, curricular matters and resource matters for the nursing programs at the assigned campus(es)
    • Track key academic metrics used to monitor performance of the nursing programs including but not limited to: NCLEX pass rates, program completion rates, and graduation rates as guided by the Program Performance Report.
    • Develop of action plans to address any areas not meeting the program standards.
    • Assess clinical site satisfaction and address opportunities for improvement.
    • Responsible for assuring the students are provided support services required to maintain the highest levels of student achievement and retention without compromising the integrity of the educational process.
    • Act as a visible ambassador for the University, who actively promotes collaboration with an array of campus and community partners.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to the University’s mission, vision, and values in daily activities as well as supporting an environment of understanding, acceptance, and appreciation for diversity.
    • Contribute in sustaining and delivering school curricula in accordance with programmatic accreditation standards and strategic planning goals.
      • Assist nursing leadership in ensuring documented program and course assessments are monitored and maintained to ensure excellence and integrity of the programs.
      • Provide advising/counseling to nursing students related to concerns or conduct issues to ensure satisfactory relationships between students and faculty members
      • Assist as needed to represent the University and the School of Nursing to students, professional organizations, partners, the healthcare community, and other relevant constituencies.
      • Process SAP appeals in conjunction with a student advisor; responsible for making recommendation to the University’s ASP appeal committee.
      • Create high levels of student engagement through activities, community building, and student-centered learning.

      Reporting Relationships:

      As the nurse administrator for their campus, this role resides within Campus Operations and reports to the Campus Executive Director. This role leads a team of campus nursing faculty and Associate Deans. This role works collaboratively with nursing stakeholders across the University, including the Vice President of Nursing, the Center for Nursing Excellence, and others.

      Requirements:

      • A minimum of 2 years previous full-time teaching experience in a nursing program within the last 5 years.
      • Doctorate degree required
      • 3-5 years Leadership/Management experience in an academic or clinical setting required, curriculum development and/or accreditation experience a plus.
      • 2 years full time or equivalent direct care experience as a practicing nurse
      • Demonstrated track-record of organizational/team/individual development.
      • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work with others in a team environment.
      • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, with an emphasis on Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point and/or Prezi.
      • Ability to establish and maintain open lines of communication with faculty, students, and campus personnel to ensure effective decision-making and interaction.
      • Self-motivated, flexible, patient, goal-oriented, and enjoy working in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
