Dean of Students provides strategic initiatives and direction for student affairs. Ensures the delivery of effective and quality service to students in the following areas: student housing, counseling, student conduct, and orientation. Being a Dean of Students counsels the top management regarding overall student morale and services. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Dean of Students typically reports to top management. The Dean of Students manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Students typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     What is the Role?

    The Dean of Students (DOS) is focused on building student culture and takes pride in working with teachers, families, school leadership, social workers, and special education coordinators to meet the needs of all students at Coney Island Prep. To best support students, the DOS may write behavior improvement plans and coach teachers on implementation in collaboration with their school leadership team, fellow DOS, special education coordinators and social workers. The DOS thrives on building community and infusing joy into school culture through event planning as well as hosting. By developing strong culture systems, the DOS directly impacts scholar success in the classroom.       

    What You’ll Be Asked To Do

    Whole School Responsibilities

    • Work directly with the Principal who will be your manager and coach; collaborate with the Culture Team, and Operations Team to plan and implement student orientation
    • Create, evaluate and seek to constantly improve overall school culture, with an emphasis on creating a culture that is academically focused, joyful, safe and secure, and allows scholars the opportunity to develop positive and age-appropriate relationships
    • Organize and coordinate incentive systems and key family events
    • Collaborate and lead Community Meeting celebrations and whole-school events or meetings
    • Facilitate professional development sessions that focus on and support trauma-informed practices
    • Proactively plan and execute systems to drive positive student behavior and create a culture of achievement
    • Check uniforms and ensure all scholars meet dress code expectations each day

    Student Behavior 

    • Use a trauma-informed lens to address and manage behaviors
    • Help students internalize and practice the school’s core PRIDE values
    • Monitor student behavior both inside and outside of the classroom
    • Support teachers by taking the initiative to address behavioral problems as they arise, ensuring that instructional time is maximized and that students miss as little time in the classroom as possible
    • Engage with parents and families to act as partners in creating successful behavior plans for scholars who may need extra assistance
    • Manage the entire dean referral process, from classroom push-in support to dean’s office processing, to restorative consequences
    • Manage suspensions, in-school and out-of-school

    Instructional Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with Leadership Team to observe and support teacher development
    • In consultation with the school’s Special Education Coordinators and Social Worker, assist in the internalization, facilitation, and observation/feedback process for Advisory groups 
    • Provide classroom management support and coaching to teachers as needed 
    • Assist and coach teachers on implementing trauma-informed systems in their classrooms
    • Serve on one or two grade teams to ensure teachers are collaborating effectively to meet the needs of all scholars

    • Cultural competencies to work in low-income communities and a willingness to examine your beliefs and biases across lines of difference
    • Bachelor's degree required, Master’s degree and NYS teaching certification strongly preferred
    • Lead teaching experience highly preferred
    • Previous charter school experience a plus
    • Background in organizational systems such as Schoolrunner, Excel, Torsh, and/or Google Sheets a plus, but not a requirement

    Coney Island Prep is a college preparatory public charter school in Brooklyn, New York.     • 349 scholars in ninth-twelfth grade at the high school

    Benefits and Compensation

    • Employees at Coney Island Prep are provided with salaries that are highly competitive, set through a lens of equity, and based on an individual’s skills and experiences relevant to the role. The salary range for this role is from $90,000 - 100,000.
    • As a regular full time employee of Coney Island Prep, you will be eligible for benefits that include medical, dental, vision, and life insurance as well as a 403(b) retirement benefit package with match and Paid Family Leave.
