Dean of Students provides strategic initiatives and direction for student affairs. Ensures the delivery of effective and quality service to students in the following areas: student housing, counseling, student conduct, and orientation. Being a Dean of Students counsels the top management regarding overall student morale and services. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Dean of Students typically reports to top management. The Dean of Students manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Students typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.   • Summary Position Description:  The Dean of Students serves as the leader in Student Success and Engagement and other institutional co-curricular initiatives. The Dean is an active participant in University-wide planning and advises in policy decisions. The Dean of Students oversees the development of students, by providing services to enhance student life by providing support for the students and addressing student behavioral issues. This position reports to the Vice President of Enrollment and Student Success & Engagement.

    Primary Job Duties:
    • Provides leadership for and in alignment with the mission, vision and values of the institution’s co-curricular programs.
    • Serves as the primary officer/supervisor as it relates to Student Community Standards and Student Conduct.
    • Primarily and independently responsible for overseeing, training, and evaluating the areas of student leadership development and programming, retention, and student conduct.
    • Primarily and independently responsible for:
      • Developing, monitoring, and assessing budgets in all areas supervised.
      • Developing, monitoring, and assessing policies, events and procedures that have an impact on students’ experience (residential and commuter); manages communications of policies, events and procedures for all students. 
    • Prepares statistical reports; coordinates the preparation of annual reports; and analysis and coordinates special research projects, including data gathering, and report development.
    • Engage in continual data and assessment-driven recommendations for improvement and in a collaborative leadership role with other departments and divisions.
    • Primarily and independently responsible for student welfare including student activities, accommodations, crisis communication with families as required; supervises student interaction with local law enforcement and medical facilities as needed.
    • Serves as a resource to faculty and staff on student behavioral issues.
    • Works closely and collaboratively with faculty, administrators, students, staff, alumni, parents, community groups, employers and other stakeholders with connections to the University and its students.
    • Collaborates closely with the Athletic Department on all actions concerning student athletes.
    • Develops an environment that supports and effectively serves a diverse student body.
    • Partners with Institutional Effectiveness department to gather information on student characteristics, attitudes and satisfaction levels to strategically utilize for institution wide programs to meet student needs.
    • Keeps current with national trends in student success and retention, responsible for the ongoing training and development of staff and faculty.
    • Provides oversight as Chief Judicial Affairs Officer and adjudicator of student appeals as well as support Title IX investigations and efforts.
    • Responsible for the communication, implementation, enforcement, and publication of Student Success policies.
    • Fosters teamwork within the Student Success department to cultivate a mutually supportive environment which encourages the facilitation, connectedness, cooperation, and effectiveness of interrelated activities and concerns.
    • Contribute to the support and implementation of the University Strategic Plan.
    • Participate in Warner Pacific University professional development opportunities.
    • Adhere to University policies and procedures.
    • Demonstrate a commitment to a Christian liberal arts education by upholding the mission of the University and abiding by the Employment Standards and Lifestyle Agreement. Warner Pacific is affiliated with the Church of God (Anderson, Indiana).

    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Master’s degree required, doctorate encouraged.
    • Five to seven years progressive leadership experience in residence life and/or student affairs.
    • An ability to articulate, lead and serve in alignment with the Christ-centered educational mission of the University demonstrating a commitment to urban, liberal arts education serving students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Knowledge of HIPAA, FERPA, Title IX, and related acts (VAWA, Clery, etc.) required.
    • Robust understanding of principles and theories of student development and factors contributing to student learning, success, and retention.
    • Deeply committed to serving students from diverse backgrounds: first-generation University students, students from low income backgrounds, ethnic minority students, and/or students who are underprepared academically.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, supervisory skills, organizational skills, administrative skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage crises are all essential.
    • Experience working with highly sensitive and/or confidential information.
    • Working knowledge of student organizations, facility management, budget management, risk reduction strategies, policy development, and strategic planning processes required.
    • Proven ability to multi-task and to balance competing resources fairly and consistently.
    • Direct experience in academic support, co-curricular programing and departmental assessment.
    • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, CRM software, Smartsheets, and Colleague.
    • Valid driver’s license; ability to travel and work evenings, nights and weekends as needed. 
    Physical Demands – Work Environment: 
    The position is located in a typical office environment.  Professional/business casual attire is required.
