Dean of Students provides strategic initiatives and direction for student affairs. Ensures the delivery of effective and quality service to students in the following areas: student housing, counseling, student conduct, and orientation. Being a Dean of Students counsels the top management regarding overall student morale and services. Typically requires an advanced degree. Additionally, Dean of Students typically reports to top management. The Dean of Students manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. To be a Dean of Students typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience.     About IDEA

    IDEA Public Charter School in Washington, D.C. serves approximately 320 students in Grades 9-12. Our unique program prepares students for both college and careers. In addition to offering college preparatory courses, including Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment options, we also provide students with a variety of options for career technical education. All students at IDEA complete a career program of study. We currently offer the following career programs: child development, construction, computer science, culinary arts, and hospitality and tourism. We are considering several new programs for School Year 2024-2025, including business management and cosmetology. Our school is located in the historic Deanwood neighborhood in Northeast Washington, D.C. We are proud to continue the tradition of educating the next generation of leaders in our community, and we are excited to bring in new talent to help us achieve our school’s mission.

    Position Overview:

    The Dean is a key member of the school's administrative team responsible for overseeing student discipline, behavior management, and overall school culture. This role involves promoting a positive and safe learning environment, enforcing school policies and procedures, and providing guidance and support to students. The Deans collaborate with teachers, administrators, parents, and community stakeholders to address student needs, foster a sense of belonging, and promote academic achievement and personal growth.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Student Discipline: Implement and enforce school policies and procedures related to student behavior, discipline, and attendance. Investigate disciplinary incidents, meet with students and parents to address infractions, and administer appropriate interventions to improve student behavior and maintain a safe and productive learning environment in the school.
    • Behavior Management: Develop and implement strategies to promote positive behavior and prevent conflicts among students. Provide support and guidance to teachers and staff in implementing classroom management techniques and proactive intervention strategies.
    • Crisis Intervention: Respond to crises and emergencies as they arise within the school community. Coordinate with administrators, counselors, and support staff to provide assistance and support to students and staff members in crisis situations.
    • Student Support Services: Collaborate with counselors, social workers, and special education staff to address the social, emotional, and academic needs of students. Provide referrals to appropriate support services and resources for students experiencing academic, behavioral, or personal challenges.
    • Parent and Community Engagement: Communicate with parents and caregivers regarding student behavior, disciplinary actions, and interventions. Foster positive relationships with families through regular communication, parent meetings, and involvement in school events and activities.
    • School Culture and Climate: Promote a positive and inclusive school culture that values respect, responsibility, and diversity. Implement programs and initiatives to promote student engagement, leadership development, and a sense of belonging within the school community.
    • Attendance Monitoring: Monitor student attendance and work with teachers, administrators, and support staff to address attendance issues. Implement interventions and supports to encourage regular school attendance and reduce truancy.
    • Leadership, Data Analysis, and Reporting: Collect and analyze data related to student behavior, discipline, and attendance to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement. Prepare reports and presentations for school leadership and stakeholders on disciplinary outcomes and school climate. Make data-informed decisions that positively impact student well-being and reduce conflict among students.
    • Manage School Operations: Work collaboratively with other school staff members to ensure effective, efficient, and safe school operations, including lunch periods, arrival, dismissal, and school events.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, School Administration, or a related field (preferred).
    • Previous experience working in an urban high school setting, preferably in a similar role.
    • Strong understanding of adolescent development, behavior management techniques, and restorative practices.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure and resolve conflicts effectively.
    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for managing disciplinary records, documentation, and reporting.

    Compensation:

    Annual Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 depending on experience and qualifications
    Benefits: health, dental,vision, and life insurance

    FLSA: full time, exempt, 12 month
