Brio's mission is to aid young girls in strengthening their faith, promoting healthy relationships, and tackling real-life issues that are crucial during the teenage years as they strive to become virtuous women. Additionally, the Editor may be tasked with developing content strategies for specific departments in the magazine as determined by content development leadership and the Editorial Director. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Conceives and brainstorms with team about viable ideas and concepts for publication in all mediums; print, e-mail, web, mobile and social Creates original copy, organizes facts, conducts interviews, edits tablet, social media and other material into the most compelling form Reviews and selects high-quality manuscripts that support mobile/magazine/online objectives Edits manuscripts from in-house and freelance writers according to standard English grammar, Associated Press style book, and FOF philosophy Proofreads copy at various stages of development to ensure quality consistent with Focus on the Family standards and principles Conducts first-hand research and maintains contact list Oversees freelance writers; assists in acquiring and developing new writers and/or content as needed Maintains currency with target audience through extensive reading, personal contact, and Internet research Maintains communication and relationship with ministry/teams on content strategy and content development Coordinates with other departments as directed to secure aggregated content coordination Fully participates in editorial and design meetings Works with designers on direction for layouts and artwork that enhances the content Monitors and controls expenses to budget Selects, develops, motivates, supervises, and evaluates editorial staff Fills in for Editorial Director as needed Consults with legal counsel on article content as required Other Duties/Responsibilities: Occasionally researches, creates, and writes original articles for publication Conducts training for staff editors and writers Performs other duties as assigned Managerial Breadth/Scope of Job: May manage a staff of 2 - 5 people; may supervise freelance writers Working Environment/Physical requirements: Office environment Occasional travel This role may require occasional travel including nights and weekends JOB QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS Character/Spiritual: Exemplifies Ephesians 5:1-2, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children and walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us...” Pursues the Great Commission given by Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:19-20, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ; maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Focus; adheres to the Standard of Moral Conduct and Statement of Faith; upholds Focus on the Family's ministry in prayer Prays personally for Focus on the Family’s staff and constituents and may occasionally lead in a public prayer Engages in Christian ministry Demonstrates behaviors aligned with FOF core values This position is a “position of responsibility” as defined in the Focus on the Family Moral Policy and is subject to the parameters defined therein regarding divorce Personal Characteristics: Keen sense of creativity with unbounded imagination Knowledge/Experience: Bachelor's Degree in Journalism, Communications, or English 5-7 years successful writing, editing and project management experience Thorough understanding of FOF mission, philosophy, values, and objectives Skills, Abilities, and Special Talents/Gifts: Excellent interpersonal skills Excellent listening skills Ability to function effectively and efficiently in a team environment Ability to handle constantly changing priorities and demands Ability to organize work effectively to meet demanding time constraints Exceptional use of the English language, punctuation, and sentence structure Ability to apply imaginative approaches to others’ ideas Ability to clearly articulate and to defend a position Ability to deal with stress due to deadline pressure Ability to plan routinely for single function department Strong organizational skillsCompetent in use of PC/Macintosh software Salary Range: $70,716 to $81,117/yr Focus on the Family puts a high value on our team members and offers a unique benefit package.
