Development Director manages an organization's fundraising strategies, campaigns, capital development initiatives, and operations to support the overall organizational development and revenue objectives. Implements donor stewardship programs to identify, develop, retain, and nurture a portfolio of individual and institutional donors. Being a Development Director works to develop potential corporate or governmental partnerships and grant funding opportunities. Creates collaborative coordination between staff and internal stakeholders to plan events and communications to increase donor engagement. Additionally, Development Director uses technology to manage and monitor donor information and produce data-driven measurement and reporting of the progress of fundraising goals. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Development Director typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget.     Summary/Objective

    The Development Director provides executive leadership, strategy development, planning, execution and accountability for The Project’s development activities. The position develops, implements and monitors a comprehensive fundraising plan to expand philanthropic support of the organization – including identifying and strengthening relationships with community stakeholders, actively pursuing and managing corporate and individual leads, fostering strong donor and sponsor stewardship, and seeking, applying for and managing grant funding.

    Requirements

    Development

    •  Serve alongside the CEO and board members in representing the organization throughout the community to build a strong network of support.
    •  Sets and maintains the Development team's strategic direction including fundraising (events and individual giving), community education, donor relationship, branding, marketing, and communications. 
    •  Lead in describing, developing, and promoting a culture of philanthropy and a comprehensive fundraising program/plan for the organization
    •  Build and maintain long-term relationships with individual donors, foundations, corporations, and public officials.
    •  Develop and implement new fundraising initiatives, such as a monthly donor program, e-fundraising, crowdfunding, donor welcome packets, and gift matching programs
    •  Plans and oversees fundraising events that effectively communicate the purposes of the organization.
    •  Performs other related duties as assigned.

    Private / Foundation / Community Grants

    •  Cultivate, solicit, and steward private foundation grants.
    •  Prepare and submit grant applications to private foundations and other non-governmental grants.
    •  Research new prospective private foundation donors in order to identify organizations with giving criteria that match the organization’s mission in order to acquire additional grant revenue for the organization.
    •  Manage private grant application processes, updates, and grant reporting.

    Public Relations

    •  Work with the CEO and Development staff to coordinate messaging and best promote The Project’s mission and other talking points around key policy issues.   
    •  Be the chief storyteller; constantly look for and share stories of The Project’s work and impact in communities and on lives of those we serve
    •  Actively promote The Project’s mission and share The Project’s messaging in as many ways/channels as possible, through your words and enthusiasm for the cause 
    •  Know the organization and its work inside and out, being willing to call on other staff members to take the lead, especially in program-focused conversations where the Development team may not be the expert

    Department / Personnel Management

    • Perform various administrative tasks associated with the management of the Department including approval of schedules and timesheets, leave requests, and other personnel related matters.
    • In consultation with the Chief Executive Officer and Human Resources Manager, hire, train, oversee, supervise, evaluate, and as necessary, institute progressive disciplinary measures with employees in compliance with the Project’s personnel policies and equity framework. Make staffing decisions and effectively delegate work appropriate to staff capabilities
    • Coordinate the planning and implementation of Department staff development and training
    • Appropriately interpret and apply The Project’s policies and procedures
    • Provides direct, constructive feedback to staff regarding job performance, encourages continued professional development and growth, and gives appropriate recognition
    • In collaboration with direct reports, ensures reporting and achievement of Key Performance Indicators and other objectives

    Leadership

    •  Provide agency leadership through full participation on Executive Leadership Team, through involvement in agency-wide activities, and by acting as a role model for employees
    •  Serve as a collaborative team member, viewing the operations of their department and the interconnectedness of their team’s work in relationship to the entire agency
    •  Supervises, mentors and trains direct report staff. Provides continuous performance management and conducts employee performance evaluations. Addresses performance and/or behavior issues, clarifying expectations and providing feedback
    •  Advance the mission of the Project by developing and maintaining professional relationships with individuals, organizations and corporate entities who support the mission or who have potential to support the mission
    •  Represent the Project at organization events, community events and meetings

    Supervisory Responsibility

    This position has supervisory responsibility for the Marketing and Communications Manager and the Community Relations and Development Coordinator (2.0 FTE) including daily direction, guidance, coaching, discipline, performance appraisal and recommendation for increases to salary.


    Physical Demands

    •  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, with typical office noise and other disruption.
    •  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Both standing and sitting are required.
    •  Various types of equipment/supplies are used to accomplish the job requirements and include, but are not limited to, calculators, computer keyboards, telephone, printers, scanner, copier etc.
    •  The employee may be required to lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move objects up to 25 pounds. 

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    Normal hours of work and days for the Project are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evening and weekend work will be required throughout the year. Working flexibly (some days of the week from home) is available.


    Travel

    Occasional overnight travel for this position may be required. 


    Required Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years of fundraising or stewardship experience, or a relevant equivalent of professional experience.
    • Specific subject matter knowledge in nonprofit operations, fundraising, and donor relations best practices.
    • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with individuals, foundations, and corporations. 
    • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively through conversations, presentations, and writing.
    • Ability to independently manage the Development efforts of the organization
    • Experience with fundraising in smaller metropolitan areas and/or rural communities; demonstrated wins in planned giving and legacy planning is a plus. 
    • Solid proficiency with technology including MS Office: Excel, PowerPoint and database knowledge. 

    Preferred Education and Experience

    • Master’s degree in business administration, philanthropic studies, social work or related field preferred with at least a minimum of five years’ senior leadership and management experience in a non-profit, public health, community health or similar organization.

    • Experience with Bloomerang Donor Management and Fundraising Software


    Compensation starts at $77,614 per year. Final offered salary is determined by years of professional and/or lived experience beyond the minimum requirement, with an additional 2.5% for those proficient in a second language relevant to the role.
