Purpose:
Conducts basic tests and field investigations to obtain data for use by environmental, engineering, and scientific personnel in determining sources and methods of controlling pollutants in air, water, and soil.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares samples for analysis in accordance with established protocols.
- Conducts basic chemical and physical laboratory and field tests according to prescribed standards to determine characteristics or composition of solid, liquid, or gaseous materials and substances.
- Collects samples of gases from air emission points, and collects other air samples and meteorological data to assist in evaluation of atmospheric pollutants.
- Collects water samples from raw, semiprocessed or processed water, industrial waste water, or water from other sources to assess pollution problem.
- Collects soil, silt, mud, or sediment samples to determine chemical composition and nature of pollutants.
- Prepares samples for testing, records data, prepares summaries and charts for review, and develops a report detailing activities performed and results received.
- Sets monitoring equipment to provide flow of information. Installs, operates, and performs routine maintenance on gas and fluid flow systems, chemical reaction systems, mechanical equipment, and other test instrumentation.
- Assists with the installation of routine equipment and instrumentation.
- Operates fixed or mobile monitoring or data collection station.
- Conducts bacteriological or other tests related to research in environmental or pollution control activity.
- Audits properties of samples collected to identify physical evidence of environmental releases.
Experience:
1 or more years of experience in an Environmental Technician role
Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required
- PPE includes but is not limited to: hard hat, task specific safety glasses, life vest, respirators, task specific hearing protection, task specific safety shoes (steel toe or metatarsal), and /or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and may change based on the location in which the work is being completed
- Ability to walk, step, climb, and otherwise move from one location on the job site to another
- Depending on equipment in use, the chosen candidate must be able to physically get into and get out of equipment through the use of vertical mounted ladders up to and including 10’ or more in height
- Ability to visually see worksite environment and observe equipment operations (either naturally or with corrective lenses)
- Ability to stand, stoop, kneel, squat, climb, and sit for long periods of time
- Ability to complete repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work
- Ability to climb vertical ladders. Working at elevated heights
- Ability to lift up to and including fifty (50) lb. objects as required
- Ability to carry up to and including fifty (50) lb. objects as required
- Ability to adapt to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure to the elements
- Ability to work outdoors in all-weather conditions
