    POSITION TITLE: Teacher Consultant 
    DEPARTMENT/SERVICE AREA: Life Skills, Special Education
    REPORTS TO: Program Supervisor, Special Education
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Length of contract based on district assignment
    CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
    SALARY: According to licensed salary schedule at time of hire.
    START DATE: 08/21/2023

    • Oregon schools have been directed by the Governor under OAR 333-019-1030 to ensure that school teachers, staff and volunteers are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  "Fully vaccinated" is defined as 14 days after receiving all required doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine (currently two shots of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or one shot of Johnson & Johnson vaccine). Under this rule employees must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Exemptions may be made only for eligible medical or religious reasons. 
     
     
     
    POSITION PURPOSE:
    To assist teacher serving students with intellectual disabilities enrolled in the Life Skills Education Program by providing behavioral support and instructional support in accordance with identified curricular guidelines and established Individual Education Plans.
     
    PRIMARY DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
    In addition to meeting the standards established for the position, each incumbent has the following primary duties and accountabilities:
     
    1. Consult with ESD and local district staff.Provide assistance implementing IEP’s.
    2. Participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings and IEP meetings to determine eligibility and develop appropriate Individual Educational Programs (IEP).
    3. Provide technical assistance on behavioral supports that help prevent or minimize behavioral problems.
    4. Assist in developing and monitoring of educational programs in all curriculum areas including: functional academics, social skills, and behavior management.
    5. Conduct classroom observations.
    6. Assist teachers in observing and coaching instructional assistants to ensure effective implementation of instructional programs.
    7. Assist in student evaluations and referrals for services.
    8. Assist in the transition and maintenance of students to appropriate local district placement.
    9. Maintain records of services as required.
    10. Demonstrate effective communication skills with students, staff, family, school and community personnel as appropriate.
    11. Provide staff development to ESD and local district staff as requested.
    12. Demonstrate instructional and behavioral support techniques.
    13. Provide recommendations for curriculum materials.
    14. Assist with planning teacher work groups and professional development for classroom staff.
    15. Collaborate with other related services professionals.
    16. Assist with information dissemination to program staff.
    17. Follow-up with classroom staff regarding ESD procedural paperwork.
    18. Serve as a supportive and cooperative member of the staff.
    19. Maintain a professional demeanor when representing the District.
    20. Maintain current knowledge of effective practices related to job assignment.
    21. Attend Special Education and other staff meetings as requested.
    22. Perform other duties as may be assigned.
     

    KNOWLEDGE/SKILL/TRAINING:
     
    1. An Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission special education license or ability to obtain one is required.
    2. Demonstrated knowledge of both federal and state special education requirements as well as current best practices in the field are essential.
    3. At least 3 years successful experience in a similar special education environment serving students with cognitive impairments and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder is required.
    4. The ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with students, parents and staff, and the ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with student, staff and/or parent information is required.
    5. A valid First Aid/CPR Card is preferred.
     
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    The teacher is normally standing, walking or sitting as required. The teacher may have to lift, bend, support and/or restrain a student whose handicapping condition or behavior requires adult assistance.
     
    WORKING CONDITIONS:
    Generally, the teacher works in an indoor work environment performing clean, non- hazardous work. In addition, the teacher may occasionally be exposed to bodily fluids due to student injury, illness or behavior.

    1. Effectively engage with individuals from diverse cultures or backgrounds.
    2. Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior, speech, and dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate professional manner for the assignment and work setting.
    3. Utilize appropriate equipment and software as established for agency use as well as other equipment and software appropriate to the assignment.
    4. Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
    5. Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.
    6. Follow all District work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority.
    7. Perform program responsibilities in accordance with statutes, administrative rules, policies, and collective bargaining agreements.

    About Lane ESD's Special Education Program
    The Life Skills Education Program serves intellectually disabled students from kindergarten through age 21. It is part of a continuum of services available to students who have been identified and placed in special education. Classrooms for students in kindergarten through grade 12 are located in a number of elementary, middle and high school buildings in six Lane County school districts. Students aged 19 to 21 are served in the Transition Program on Lane ESD's Westmoreland Campus. Support services include speech and language therapy, vocational/community training, behavioral consultation, autism consultation, supported inclusion, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and nursing consultation services.
     
    The Special Education Service Area also provides School Psychology, Speech Language Therapy and Augmentative Communication services, behavior consultation, Regional Low Incidence Program services and direct services for adjudicated youth.
