    Department Statement:
    The University Museums at Colgate is seeking an Education and Outreach Manager who is passionate about student engagement in museum spaces and energized by opportunities to implement innovative museum programming.
    The University Museums consists of Picker Art Gallery and the Longyear Museum of Anthropology. Reporting to two co-directors, this position will have primary responsibility for overseeing education and student engagement for both museums. He/she/they will work alongside colleagues whose roles also span the two museums and their collections. The University Museums are at an exciting point in their history. As a key component of Colgates ambitious Middle Campus Plan for Arts, Creativity, and Innovation, our team is currently reenvisioning and redefining how academic museums fit into the contemporary liberal arts experience and into the cultural fabric of the regional communities into which the campus is embedded. Our strategic plan prioritizes implementing decolonizing practices across museum operations, creating a more inclusive and accessible program, increasing student and faculty engagement, enhancing collaborations on and off campus, and developing collections that represent a wider range of identities and experiences.

    Accountabilities:
    The Education and Outreach Manager provides key oversight in the development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of educational programs for various museum audiences. This position also plays a lead role in promoting student engagement with the museums and overseeing student employees and ambassadors. The person filling the position will accountable for the following:
    • Working closely with museum staff, university departments, and community partners to develop, implement, and oversee the museum's schedule of public programs.
    • Establishing evaluation processes to regularly review the success of the public programs.
    • Engaging in best practices for bringing diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion, as well as decolonizing principles, to all museum programs and in-gallery education components.
    • Recruiting, training, and supervising student employees, including interns, gallery attendants, and student docents, including managing student schedules to ensure staffing needs are met during gallery open hours and for all public programs.
    • Ensuring fair and accurate decisions regarding employment status (hire, promotion, salary increases, termination); ensuring the creation of effective opportunities and programs for employee mentoring, development and sustained performance.
    • Creating, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive training program to impart knowledge and skills for student employees and interns.
    • Collaborating with staff, faculty, and other stakeholders to integrate and share intern experiences and projects in-person and digitally.
    • Facilitating museum visits for a variety of audiences, including student organizations, Colgate classes, K-12 groups, life-long learners, and community groups.
    • Developing and implementing strategies for engaging with communities on and off campus to create programming that is responsive to their feedback.
    • Developing and maintaining close relationships with the Teacher Prep Program and Educational Studies Department.
    • Creating resources on engaging with the collection, including finding aids on core subjects and topics to expand student and faculty engagement with collections.
    • Providing research, editing, and content writing support for interpretive and didactic exhibition and collection related materials.
    • Working closely with museum and university staff to conduct research and writing on grants as needed.
    • When necessary, provide supervision and guidance to part-time museum education staff
    • Performing other duties as assigned.




    All technical and behavioral competencies may not have to be demonstrated/proven at the time of application. Competencies are expected to be demonstrated within a reasonable period of time.

    Professional Experience/Qualifications
    • Minimum two (2) years of experience in a museum or other arts or cultural institution, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative educational programs and projects.
    • Solid understanding of and commitment to decolonizing, equity, and inclusion practices, preferably in a museum context.
    • Ability to work collegially with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students on a daily basis.
    • Strong writing and editing skills.
    • Flexibility and the ability to think creatively.
    • Knowledge of relevant computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, Adobe Creative Cloud applications)

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Additional experience (more than 2 years) in an educational role in a museum or other arts or cultural institution, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
    • Previous supervisory experience, such as overseeing undergraduate student employees or interns.
    • Knowledge of specialized museum computer programs (The Museum System, eMuseum)
    • Knowledge of current tools and methods for evaluating programs in museum spaces



    Education
    • Bachelors degree in museum education, museum studies, art history, anthropology, history or a related field, or demonstrable equivalent experience is required.
    • Masters degree in museum education, museum studies, art history, anthropology, history or a related field, or demonstrable equivalent experience is strongly preferred.



    Other Information
    Starting pay for this position is in the low $50ks.
