Museum Education Intern

    Work Schedule: Generally, Friday-Sunday and weekdays as scheduled programs dictate; not to exceed 28 hours per week or 6 months in duration.

    NATURE OF WORK
    As a member of the Parks, Recreation & Culture (PRC) Division, the Town of Windsor Museums’ mission is to build community through creativity and discovery. As part of the Culture Division of the Windsor Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department, the Museums consist of the Art & Heritage Center, an exhibit and program space; and the Windsor History Museum, a collection of the historical buildings including the town’s 1882 Train Depot, which houses historical exhibits. The History Museum also features two education gardens including a vegetable plot and a pollinator patch. The Museums seek to provide exceptional educational and interpretive experiences focusing on local history, nature education, and art.  

    Museum staff will gain meaningful paid experience with a focus on either museum education or collections and exhibitions management. Museum Education positions will assist in the planning, preparation, and implementation of museum programs and events. Collections and Exhibitions positions will assist in the development, planning, supervision, and implementation of museum exhibitions and collections care. Intern staff will also gain experience in museum operations, including staffing the front desk, maintaining historic buildings, delivering interpretive tours, and assisting with the development of self-guided interpretive experiences.
     
    Additionally, interns will attend a Certified Interpretive Guide training and receive a lifelong certification through the National Association for Interpretation. Interns will also receive training in history, arty, and nature education and facilitation. The museum runs a variety of programs from nature education camps to art workshops.  Interns will explore many different aspects and possibilities of museum education.

    Please note that town employees (including seasonal employees) may only be employed in one classification at any one given time.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED
    Individuals work under the direct supervision of the Museum Education Coordinator (for Education positions) and the Museum Curator (for Collections positions), who manages the summer staff to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles, and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

    SUPERVISION/LEADERSHIP EXERCISED 
    No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
    Individuals in Town of Windsor Museum Intern roles are assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulation and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
    The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all inclusive:

    Museum Collections and Exhibitions Intern
    • Process and catalog museum collections including archival and 3D objects
    • Assist with exhibition research and implementation
    • Assist with installation and de-installation of exhibitions
    Museum Education Positions
    • Assist museum staff in the creation, implementation, and facilitation of educational and interpretive programs, tours, summer camps, and events
    • Assist with the implementation of outreach activities including activity tables at community events, museum events, and evening programming
    All Town of Windsor Museum Summer Positions
    • Supervise public visitation of the museum facilities, including answering questions and providing interpretive building tours as needed.
    • Act as a steward of the Town of Windsor Museum sites, including opening and closing facilities in a trustworthy manner
    • Participate in training and professional development as needed to successfully perform responsibilities
    • Adhere to Town policies, standards, and regulations, including but not limited to proper attire, safety procedures, and overall professionalism
    • Performs related work as required and assigned
    OTHER DUTIES
    Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
    • Performs research as directed, such as discovering new technology, tools, market research, programs, etc.
    • Submit hours and an accurate time card on time and in compliance with Town policies
    • Give and receive constructive criticism and feedback
    • Perform minor first aid and emergency contact as necessary
    • Complete and submit accident/incident reports as necessary
    • May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions
    • Performs related duties as established by law/ordinance or reasonably directed by the Town
    • Assists other programs & Town departments/divisions as necessary
    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & FORMAL TRAINING
    • Must be at least 18 years of age or older
    • Anyone interested in the museum field is welcome to apply. Those enrolled in a related degree program (history, art, museum studies, environmental studies, education, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.
    • One (1) year of experience working with the public, including public speaking, customer service, or teaching groups of children and adults, preferably in a museum or educational setting.

    LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
    • A valid Colorado Driver's License that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards and ability to maintain throughout employment

    • Ability to speak publicly and communicate effectively to a variety of audiences of all ages
    • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes shifts most weekends and, in the daytime, as scheduled events and museum open hours dictate

    • Ability to make independent decisions and work both with minimal supervision and as a part of a team by supporting others and taking initiative to complete programs or projects
    • Must have the ability to operate a variety of standard office equipment, e.g. copier, fax machine and personal computer
    • Ability to apply common sense in order to understand and carry out simple one- or two-step instructions
    • Proficient in computer software, including Microsoft Office suite
    • Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures, including in emergency situations
