Job Description Summary
The Simulation Education Specialist and Immunization Compliance Coordinator is a member of a team of Health Educators who are cross-trained and cross- assigned to assist in the assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of medical education programs for medical students, practicing physicians, physicians in training, and other health care providers.
- Responsibilities vary and may include the following : operating and programming human patient simulators / task trainers in a variety of learning environments;
- serving as course assistant and teaching of clinical procedures in Clinical Skills I & II; coordinating and direct teaching American Heart Association courses;
Case training, assessing, and evaluating SP and student performance in the SP Program; and Tracking and managing all of WVSOM student immunization requirements.
This is a full-time, non-classified position; it is exempt from FLSA regulations concerning overtime. Not all activities of this position occur within the confines of an 8 : 00-4 : 30 schedule and will require evening and weekend scheduling as needed.
This position is not eligible for telework and must be in-person on the WVSOM Campus. Occasional travel may be required.
The weekly schedule for this position will be established between the supervisor and the employee and approved given the needs of the department and the institution.
Some travel will be required.
This position has been designated as Essential. This means that when WVSOM is faced with an institutional emergency, employees in such positions may be required to remain at their work location or to report to work to protect, recover and continue operations at WVSOM.

Education / Knowledge Minimum Education Required Licenses / Certification Licenses or certifications required for the position Licensed Practical Nurse, or Licensed Registered NurseAmerican Heart Association :
- Certified BLS
- ACLS certification within 6 months of employment
- Certified BLS Instructor card (required within one year) Certified ACLS Instructor card (required within one year)
Certified Simulation Healthcare Operation Specialist (CHSOS) or Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) required within 4 years of employment.
Skills Required Education and Experience
- LPN with at least 4 years of clinical experience.
- Registered nurse with at least 3 years of clinical experience.
- An equivalent combination of relevant and recent experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Skills Required : This position requires knowledge of clinical skills, sterile technique, use of patient monitoring equipment, use of defibrillators, AEDs, noninvasive monitors, clinical physiologic knowledge, computer proficiency, ability to teach clinical skills to others, excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to learn new skills on the job, decision making and problem solving skills, high quality maintenance procedures and practices, attention to detail, calibration and troubleshooting of equipment, ability to provide debriefing sessions.
Requires ability to multitask in a busy environment and adapt to changes quickly. Able to work cooperatively within varying teams of medical and simulation professionals.
Duties and Responsibilities Duties and Responsibilities Assessment :
- Assess and evaluate students, assigning a pass / fail grade in multiple courses including clinical procedures in CS I and CS II.
- Assess and evaluate students assigning a score for the SOAP note portion of the OSCE (high stakes exam for 2nd and 3rd year students).
- Assess and evaluate students, Graduate Teaching Assistants, faculty, residents and outside health providers, and assigning a pass / fail grade for certification in BLS and ACLS courses according to AHA guidelines.
- Assess and evaluate SPs, including video review for proper portrayal and grading.
Teaching :
- Teach clinical procedures in CS I and CS II as well as at Statewide Campus Education Days, and in other curricular activities as assigned.
- Teach BLS & ACLS courses to students, GTAs, faculty, residents, and outside healthcare providers.
- Teach Stop the Bleed Course to staff, faculty, and students using the AAOS (American Academy of Surgeons) guidelines and standards.
- Assess teaching needs and recruit appropriate individuals (RNs, Paramedics) to meet the needs of CS I & II courses, OB lab, etc.
- Research up to date best practice information prior to teaching clinical procedures.
- Prepare educational materials for distribution to students.
- Provide case training for SPs to include medical content (physical examination techniques & special tests).
Simulation :
- Run scenarios as a simulation operator, programming making the simulators appropriately respond based on the student interventions.
- Program simulation scenario within simulator software.
- Participate in debriefing scenarios within scope of practice.
- Ensure all simulation props and medical equipment are set up in a timely manner for training and course activities.
- Maintain simulation equipment including troubleshooting, cleaning and basic repair of equipment, interfacing with equipment manufacturers as needed.
- Provide recommendations for budget and purchase of equipment, supplies, and materials and assist in maintaining inventory of all simulation and skills lab supplies, materials and equipment.
Administrative :
Employees will be cross trained in the following areas : CSII course assistant / BLS Sim Lab / ACLS / BLS / Stop the BleedSP / Task TrainersImmunization / Needlestick / OSHA / HIPPA Training AED and First Aid Kit Maintenance
Service to WVSOM
- Provide tours for admission candidates on a weekly and as needed basis
- Provide experiences for community groups and schools
- Provide support to student clubs
- Promote WVSOM with outside activities
Duties and Responsibilities Duties of the Immunization Compliance Coordinator
- Coordinate the immunization program at WVSOM including training students on and serving as an administrator for the cloud-based record keeping software that stores all immunization records for all WVSOM students.
- Review all immunization documentation uploaded on the cloud-based record keeping software, and advise students on all vaccination related issues.
- Ensure proper documentation of needle or sharp instrument injuries, instruct students on required follow up, and maintain records for all needlestick injuries.
- Administer yearly OSHA and HIPPA training for students and email completed certificates.
- Communicate with the Associate Deans of Pre-clinical and Pre-doctoral Education as needed.
- Other related duties as assigned or directed
