    PURPOSE:  The purpose of the Director of Electric Operations  is responsible for the operation areas and management of the electric division, construction, and engineering at DES. This position will be responsible to ensuring for the fulfillment of DES mission vision and purpose in accordance to the directives of the General Manager.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    1. Oversee the management of operations, constructions and engineering.
    2. Provide general oversight for all systems improvements, infrastructure, and plant construction.
    3. Supervises personnel, which includes work allocation, motivation, training, retention, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
    4. Develops workforce and organizational needs through cultivating a workforce with the skills and knowledge to align with evolving business needs and working with staff to develop recruitment and retention strategies.
    5. Ensure delivery and management of safe and reliable electricity to DES customers.
    6. Develop and maintain the trust of the community and evaluate DES’ value and effectiveness to the community.
    7. Responsible for developing strategic plans and seeing business objectives for the electric division.
    8. Assist in identifying partnership opportunities and overseeing implementation of such arrangements.
    9. Act as an advocate for issues relevant to DES and its services withing the public and private sectors.
    10. Initiate, develop, and maintain cooperative relationships with key accounts.
    11. Keep up to date on all regulatory guidelines and ensures the staff is educated and in compliance.
    12. Keeps current on technology, regulatory guidelines, and the electrical industry.
    1. Other duties as assigned by GM.

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or business administration required with five to ten years’ experience in senior leadership position in utility operations or related field; or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties. 

     

    SPECIAL SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    1. Experience in management of a municipal utility operation.
    2. Excellent written and verbal communication and networking shills required.
    3. Must have thorough knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in electrical utility.
    4. Must have thorough knowledge of hazards involved in electrical utility work.
    5. Leader who is approachable and visible, brings a high level of energy and passion for the business, possesses a strong customer service and public service mentality.
    6. Ability to effectively communicate with customers, other employees of DES and the general public.
    7. Must be willing and able to follow OSHA, TOSHA and DES safety regulations and policies.
    8. Must be able to work independently or as part of a team and relate well with co-workers.
    9. Must have calm demeanor and the highest degree of integrity, honesty, pleasant disposition, dependability and tact, and must treat all DES employees with dignity and respect.  Must be able to maintain composure during difficult situations to discuss and resolve issues and maintain open communications to achieve DES goals and objectives.
    10. Must believe in, be sympathetic with, be interested in furthering the public understanding and acceptance of the utility’s objective and be customer service oriented at all times.
    11. Must be willing to work with all employees in the best interest of the utility and to accept changes in work programs and patterns to keep pace with changing times. 

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Able to work 8-hour shifts or longer if emergency situations require.
    2. Must be able to lift and carry 0-50 pounds ability to walk and stand, ability to stoop, kneel and crouch; and the ability to talk, see, and hear.
    3. Must be able to work under any type of weather conditions.
    4. Must be skilled in the application of first aid methods.
    5. Must be able to follow safe and efficient work practices.
    6. Must possess visual acuity and manual dexterity as well as the ability to listen and communicate orally.

     

    LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS:

    1Must possess at the time of employment a valid Tennessee Driver License and a safe driving
          record.  Maintaining the driver’s license is a continuing condition of employment.

    2.  Must maintain at the time of employment or obtain at a time designated by DES, a valid     

         certification of proficiency in adult CPR, first aid, and AED.
