Operations Superintendent

  • Anticipated starting salary is between $110,364 - $129,840  depending on qualifications.  

     This is a professional, supervisory position with significant discretion and judgment in managing the safe and efficient movement of cargo through the Northwest Seaport Alliance. This position plans, evaluates, organizes, and leads breakbulk operations and rail operations, which includes planning and coordinating labor and equipment requirements at marine terminal facilities to ensure resources are available for efficient operations. This position is also responsible for maintaining communications with cargo and ocean carrier customers and their agents, U.S. Customs officials, USDA, USCG, Tugboat operations, the Port’s customer service and maintenance departments; for performance of supervisory duties and responsibilities; and for cost analysis and rate development support. A professional degree and substantial experience in logistics or supply chain management is required.

    • Evaluates, plans, organizes, and leads breakbulk and rail operations for the NWSA. Exercises discretion to establish work schedules and priorities for cargo movement. Includes responsibility for maintaining contact with Tacoma Rail via conference calls to update them on mainline railroads, schedule, and train changes as well as car requirements on a regular basis.
    • Serves as an Alliance representative in communications with labor, customers, railroads, Port Security, and government agents; facilitates the efficient handling, storing, clearance and movement of cargo.
    • Supervises ILWU foremen and supervisors during the issuing/receiving and load/discharge of cargo and monitoring of damage and other incidents. Serves the members of the operational team by cross training with individual’s roles/tasks to help form one cohesive unit while strengthening the bandwidth/understanding of the department overall. 
    • Compiles, analyzes and maintains statistical data on cost and productivity for specific activities as required. Prepares resulting reports and documentation in connection with the cargo movement. Communicates with the billing department regarding the movement of cargo under the NWSA’s tariff. 
    • Evaluates, determines, and develops methods of handling new commodities and improved cargo handling methods; keeps abreast of new developments in equipment and cargo handling techniques, and recommends capital improvements. Leads operational staff along with the leadership of the organization in operational strategic planning that helps achieve our long-term goals that match our overall mission, vision, and values.
    • Evaluates, determines, and leads safety compliance and improvements in NWSA operations. Advises the Director, Port Operations of hazardous working conditions or potential safety hazards in the marine terminal areas and assist to coordinate resolution of liability claims in conjunction with the Alliance’s insurance agent and claims manager. Ensures that all safety, environmental and emergency response operating procedures and standards are followed.

    Bachelor’s degree in logistics transportation, supply chain management, or maritime transportation management or a related field is required. An additional four (4) years of relevant experience may substitute for a bachelor’s degree. 

    A minimum of five (5) years as a stevedore, maritime agent, or similar position in operations or in the transportation field, as well as five (5) years supervisory experience and knowledge of hazardous materials regulations is required. 

    Experience working with cargo related labor force and shipping agent is required. Experience at a port authority is highly desirable.

    The ideal candidate must have professional level knowledge and experience in marine logistics, cargo movement, and cargo management. Knowledge of computer technology, operations and hazardous materials regulations is required. The ability to work as part of team is also required. The ability to work with labor is also essential.
