  • The Laboratory Director reports to the Vice President of Operations. Maintains 24-hour responsibility for the management of Laboratory personnel including satellite offices and all related services. Contributes to Patient Care Services and hospital through support of philosophy, objectives, and educational efforts. Provides administrative leadership and direction including planning, directing, financial performance, performance improvement, human resource management, evaluation of care, and service initiatives. Strives for superior performance by consistently providing excellence in services for that is recognized as ultimately contributing to the staff, patient and family experience. Recognizes and demonstrates understanding of patient and family centered care.

    Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Plans, organizes, and directs overall department operation.
    • Participates in organizational strategic planning processes as appropriate.
    • Proposes new services, practices, and technology based upon feasibility studies and best practices to broaden the scope of services and improve the quality of care in the Laboratory.
    • Explores feasibility and evaluates effectiveness of new services, practices, and technology.
    • Develops and maintains a culture that supports the concepts of Service and Operational Excellence.
    • Assesses quality of care and service provided and implements initiatives for continuous improvement.
    • Provides administrative oversight to plan, implement, and evaluate care delivered in Laboratory that reflects the hospital’s and Patient Care Service’s philosophy using effective principles of leadership and management.
    • Identifies problems or potential problems in assigned departments and works with staff and lead technologists to develop solutions to resolve.
    • Develops operating and capital budget to assure appropriate space and resources while maintaining fiscal accountability.
    • Achieves financial performance in accordance with organizational expectations.
    • Provides appropriate human resource management including recommending sufficient number of qualified staff, assessment of staff competence, provision of ongoing education, evaluation of performance, and coaching/corrective action to achieve improved performance of staff.
    • Develops and utilizes policies and procedures and operating instructions as needed, and ensures that the standards of the regulatory agencies (TJC, MDCH, CAP, CLIA, etc.) are met on the unit.
    • Participates in in-service and/or continuing education to maintain and improve understanding of the present and future trends in health care.
    • Responsible for employee engagement, patient satisfaction, quality, efficiency and financial performance of laboratory and pathology services.   Responsibilities include assessing, directing operations and strategic planning for continuous improvement efforts.
    • Participates in professional and community activities related to health care.
    • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with physicians, other departments, and staff.
    • Actively participates in the Director’s Council and organizational strategic planning.
    • Demonstrates job related aspects of patient safety to assure a safe environment, safe and effective use of equipment and technology, and decreased risk of potential adverse patient occurrences.
    • Communicates and demonstrates knowledge of and supports hospital mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, standards of behavior, confidentiality statements, corporate compliance plan, customer service standards, and the code of ethical behavior.
    • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served on his/her assigned unit. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his-her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit’s and division’s policies and procedures.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Baccalaureate degree in a laboratory medicine-related field. - Required
    • Medical technology background - Preferred.
    • MBA, MSA, or DLS (ASCP) - Strongly Preferred 
    • Five- seven years of hospital experience and significant experience in laboratory medicine - Required. 
    • At least Five years of technical leadership/supervisory experience - Required
    • MT or equivalent (not a MLT) - Required
