    Job Description

    The Director, Environmental Health & Safety reports to the Executive Director, Public Safety & Chief of Police and will lead the University’s comprehensive campus environmental health and safety program through effective communication and collaboration with leadership across campus, including the Financial Vice President and Treasurer, Offices of the Executive Vice President, Provost, Vice Provost for Research, Vice President for Facilities, and General Counsel with a service-oriented approach toward students, faculty, staff and visitors.

    Key program management and advisory areas of responsibility will include: laboratory safety; management of environmental compliance areas; oversight of worker safety programs under OSHA, including the employee safety training program; fire safety and fire prevention; support to the University AED program; and oversight of contract and services for management and disposal of hazardous chemical waste, biohazardous wastes, electronic wastes, and universal wastes.

    The EH&S Director will also manage a professional team and work with partners across campus on evaluation, prevention, mitigation and or abatement of existing or potential environmental health and safety issues; establish programs, policies, and procedures to facilitate compliance with all applicable University, local, state, and federal codes and regulations; and monitor emerging regulations that may affect University operations.  In addition, the Director will develop strategies for effective communication with the Boston College community, outside agencies and other stakeholders and advise and provide technical guidance to the community on EH&S matters.  

    Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $153,600 to $192,000; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

    Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in an area related to environmental science/health, environmental/civil engineering, safety, chemistry, or biology.  Master’s degree preferred.

    Seven years of progressively increasing management, supervisory and budgetary experience necessary, preferably in an academic or research setting; and in depth knowledge of applicable EH&S laws, regulations, nationally recognized standards, guidelines, and best practices.

    Strong meeting facilitation, communication, project management and organizational skills.

    Ability to foster trust and build interpersonal relationships; lead committees and provide background information and effectively advocate for and escalate issues or needs related to EH&S.
