Epidemiologist monitors and investigates known or suspected sources and transmission of communicable diseases. Collects, analysis, and interprets disease data using appropriate statistical and research methods. Being an Epidemiologist reviews sterilization, disinfection and waste control techniques and recommends changes as needed. Develops and coordinates effective and practical interventions and procedures to control and prevent disease in the community or facility. Additionally, Epidemiologist typically requires a master's degree of microbiology. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Epidemiologist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. Work is generally independent and collaborative in nature.     Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate and coordinate with various stakeholders to maintain, grow, and manage COVID-19 surveillance.
    • Participate in national initiatives related to pan respiratory/COVID-19 surveillance.
    • Maintain current knowledge of epidemiology and biology of respiratory diseases, especially COVID-19.
    • Provide epidemiologic consultation and technical assistance to partners and the general public.
    • Manage and analyze data collected through surveillance and epidemiologic studies.
    • Monitor data reporting and dashboards, collaborate with data analysts to update dashboards.
    • Prepare and disseminate reports and presentations for internal and external partners.
    • Conduct educational presentations and trainings for different audiences.
    • Engage with the public at health fairs and outreach events.
    • Participate in writing grants and funding proposals.
    • Conduct routine epidemiologic surveillance and applied studies.
    • Serve as a spokesperson and evaluate legislative or policy proposals as needed.
    • Serve as a backup to other staff.
    • Perform related duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements:

    • Master’s degree in relevant field with ≥2 years' experience OR equivalent experience in public health.
    • Knowledge, skills, and abilities related to epidemiology, public health, and data analysis.
    • Current employee promotion requirement: High-performing Epidemiologist 1 or equivalent.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of epidemiology, public health laws, and regulations.
    • Skills in surveillance, data analysis, and public health investigations.
    • Ability to communicate effectively and prioritize tasks.
    • Proficiency in statistical and analytical software.
    • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders and provide customer service.

    Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

    • May direct and coordinate interns assigned to the program.

    Difficulty of Work:

    • Requires expert knowledge of COVID-19 epidemiology and public health.
    • Exercises independent judgment in complex situations.
    • Must prioritize emergent public health threats and identify process improvements.

    Responsibility:

    • Supports IDOH's vision, complies with policies, and practices cultural sensitivity.
    • Protects patient confidentiality and identifies ethical conflicts.
    • Works closely with supervisor to develop and execute projects.

    Personal Work Relationships:

    • Works closely with various stakeholders, maintains good relationships.

    Physical Effort:

    • Requires ability to type, communicate, and sit/stand for a workday.

    Working Conditions:

    • Indoor office setting with occasional field work and travel.
    • May require immunizations for communicable diseases and driving in inclement weather.

    Required Qualifications and Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field (such as public health, biological sciences, or social sciences) with at least 4 years of experience in Public Health, OR a Bachelor's Degree in a non-relevant field with at least 6 years of experience in Public Health.
    • Expert knowledge of the epidemiology of COVID-19, pan-respiratory diseases, and public health topics.
    • Knowledge of state laws and regulations and federal public health guidance documents related to diseases and public health topics.
    • Knowledge of epidemiology and biology of diseases and public health topics.
    • Demonstrated skill in statistical, analytical, and/or geospatial software (e.g., EpiInfo, SAS, ArcGIS, SQL, SPSS, R, Python, Stata, etc.).
    • Prior experience conducting public health investigations of individual cases and/or outbreaks of diseases or public health topics.
    • Prior experience managing large datasets, performing complex data analyses, and identifying key findings.
    • Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders including state residents, state agencies, and public health departments.

    Highly Desired Qualifications:

    • A Master’s Degree in a non-relevant field with at least 4 years’ public health experience.
    • A Master’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences, or social sciences) with at least 2 years’ relevant public health experience.
