Estimating Manager manages the estimating function and develops standards, procedures, tools, and methodologies to produce cost estimates for technical projects based on work scope, specifications, and proposal or contract requirements. Establishes processes to perform analysis of project requirements, plans, and specifications to identify labor, material, equipment, and service requirements. Being an Estimating Manager incorporates benchmark data, trends, and historical pricing to generate detailed cost estimates that consist of itemized lists of expenses, labor hours, material quantities, and potential cost variations. Implements a workflow and system for scheduling and processing estimate requests and communicating with stakeholders. Additionally, Estimating Manager depending on the complexity and type of project, may use different estimating methods, mathematical models, or specialized estimating software tools to generate estimates. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a director. The Estimating Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be an Estimating Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required. A day in the life:
- Assist sales managers and division managers in determining what types of projects to bid
- Develop specific project bid strategies, techniques, advantages, etc.
- Review all final estimates to ensure accuracy and completeness prior to formal quotation
- Participate in presentations to corporate management and clients
- Provide assistance for close orders
- Provide technical assistance in negotiating contracts, change orders, etc.
- Review estimating procedures and practices for efficiency and consistency
- Engage in talent acquisition and talent development
- Maintain current estimating database; ensure that commodity material pricing is at current market levels; manage estimating software updates
- Interact with fabrication and operations to develop and track time studies for prefabrication
You should have:
- Possess minimum of ten years of commercial/industrial mechanical estimation experience
- Possess estimation and bid experience of projects in excess of $10m (single project) Mechanical portion of total contract at $10 million
- Possess mechanical and/or plumbing trade knowledge
- Demonstrate experience with QuickPen
- Ability to deal diplomatically and effectively with teammates and external customers
