  • Gentry Locke Attorneys has an opening for a full-time paralegal to join our Civil Defense Litigation Practice Group in Roanoke. The paralegal position requires experience in litigation with workers’ compensation experience strongly preferred. This position will collaborate directly with multiple attorneys on workers’ compensation matters. The successful candidate will be an ambitious, organized team player who works well in a fast-paced, client-focused environment. A college/paralegal degree is preferred. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and the willingness to learn modern technology required.

    • Follows the ethical requirements as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct.
    • Reviews and analyzes cases in order to assist in preparation of case for trial and/or hearings.
    • Reviews and analyzes matters for the purpose of preparing evaluations and status reports for clients.
    • Assists Attorneys by preparing documents.
    • Conducts research and locates cases, depositions, opinions, reports, and supporting information.
    • Contacts and interviews parties, witnesses, and experts, including obtaining written statements from witnesses.
    • Reviews and outlines depositions and indexes and summarizes documents.
    • Utilizes computerized litigation techniques and software when applicable.
    • Assists in preparation of the case for trial.
    • Performs assigned legal research using all available resources which includes computer data systems.
    • Manages voluminous records, (i.e., medical records) and is familiar and mindful of Patient Privacy Act and confidentiality.
    • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

    • Knowledge of legal principles and practices acquired through education, formal paralegal training or its equivalent.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when evaluating legal matters.
    • Ability to proofread.
    • Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate in person, by e-mail and telephone, and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys, and staff. Must be able to convey information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
    • Work occasionally requires a high level of effort while organizing and maintaining multiple cases.
    • Ability to retrieve, print and distribute volumes of client files and support information. Must be able to push and pull packages, and books weighing up to 20 pounds as well as retrieve and replace objects from shelves of up to 8 feet high.
    • Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week. May also require irregular hours to perform the essential duties of the position.
    • Ability to operate standard office equipment.
    • Ability to travel to private and public buildings, locally and statewide, via private or public conveyance to assist attorney in attending to client needs on legal matters.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
