FACILITIES SUPERVISOR supervises and coordinates the day-to-day maintenance and support of buildings, grounds, and facilities systems. Oversees staff installing, inspecting, repairing, and maintaining building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, safety, and waste management. Being a FACILITIES SUPERVISOR tracks work orders and ensures work follows established service and quality standards for completion. Schedules and supervises preventative maintenance, painting, or carpentry projects. Additionally, FACILITIES SUPERVISOR maintains a safe and effective working environment that complies with regulations and laws. May coordinate work to be completed by contractors and skilled trades. Typically requires an associate degree. Typically reports to a manager. The FACILITIES SUPERVISOR supervises a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. To be a FACILITIES SUPERVISOR typically requires 3 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.   • This position is a hands-on position, and the physical requirements for this position must be met. Responsible for administering the daily operations of the Franklin Park Zoo Facilities Department and grounds to ensure a safe, clean, and secure environment for staff, visitors and our animal collection.  Responsible for keeping abreast of and following OSHA requirements. Duties include but are not limited to, managing facilities staff, delegation of work assignments, and ensuring required training and performance measurements are key components in managing staff. . Coordinates and oversees activities of outside contractors ensuring their compliance regarding zoo policies, protocols, and scope of work. Coordinate cross-departmental activities as needed with staff, administer payroll, scheduling, order materials, track inventory supplies, and manage the completion of work orders and preventative maintenance tasks. Supervise and oversee all applicable facilities and grounds related activities regarding special events, including ZNE’s evening events.  The Facilities Supervisor is required to abide by and enforce ZNE’s uniform and grooming policies. The Facilities Supervisor must maintain a pleasant attitude and encourage positive employee morale through effective coaching techniques for their staff. Regular work schedule, Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday-Thursday, from  7:00am – 4:00pm. Must be flexible and able to work outside of regular work schedule as needed. Must be available 24/7 to respond to facilities emergencies.


    Duties & Responsibilities


    • Responsible for all daily facilities scheduled tasks, ensuring that the zoo is operational on a daily basis for entering guests.
    • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a Preventative Maintenance System.
    • Provide coaching, guidance and mentoring of facilities staff on an ongoing basis.
    • Facilitate the Annual Performance Evaluations for facilities staff.
    • Schedule, assign and supervise facilities staff relative to daily institutional needs, project timelines, and goals.
    • Schedule appointments with contractors as needed
    • Coordinate with other zoo departments and outside contractors on various projects.
    • Responsible for managing projects using ZNE’s work order system, Building Engines.
    • Order supplies as needed.
    • Responsible for the appropriate record keeping for such items as SDS logs, equipment information, ZNE vehicles, vehicle maintenance and technical equipment, etc.
    • Must be able to communicate effectively in English in both written and verbal formats.
    • Must be able to communicate with the public, vendors and other Zoo associates in a professional and courteous manner.
    • Provide helpful feedback and recommendations to the Director of Facilities concerning the hiring, promoting and termination of facilities staff. 
    • Responsible for working in all types of weather conditions as needed.
    • Responsible for zoo snow removal tasks & duties.
    • Assist and help manage special event set-up and breakdown as directed.

    While performing the duties of this position the employee is required to talk, hear, see, stand, walk, and bend/stoop, crawl/kneel, carry/lift up to 50 lbs., reach, climb/balance, push and pull. Must be able to apply limited manual dexterity in combination with eye-hand coordination such as in the operation of a basic keyboard, basic hand tools, and instruments, operating office equipment and operating a vehicle. Employee must have good vision to read documents for general understanding and for analytical purposes. Occasionally the Facilities Supervisor is required to review non-written materials (diagrams/maps) for general observation purposes.  It is necessary for the Facilities Supervisor to differentiate between colors.


    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that the Facilities Supervisor will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. Routinely work is performed within an office setting or outside, with exposure to various weather elements common to winter, spring, summer, and fall. The work environment may consist of uneven terrain, cramped spaces, and dust, warm and cold temperatures. 


     Minimum Job Requirements


    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in facilities operations.
    • 3 years of supervisory experience.
    • Must be able to provide and perform at least 3 of the following services, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, painting, welding, sheetrock, and drywall finishing.
    • Schedule, coordinate and supervises work of outside contractors.
    • Technical degree or related work experience.
    • Ability to manage and maintain a budget.
    • Fluent in English, and possess written and oral communication skills.
    • Ability and willingness to function independently and as a team member.
    • Able to lift and carry items up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to solve problems efficiently and effectively under pressure.
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license in good standing.
    • Able and available to work weekends, holidays, evenings, overnight, and overtime as needed.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the Facilities Director.
    • Must respond to phone calls/messages on company-issued cell phone in a timely manner.


     Preferred Job Requirements


    • Have 5 years working experience with certification in any of the following trades:

            Plumbing, HVAC, Welding & Steel Fabrication, Electrical, Carpentry, and Masonry

    • Previously worked in the Facilities Department for a Not-For-Profit Organization.
    • Previously worked in the Facilities Department at a Zoo.
    • Bi-lingual is a plus.
