Mental Health Rehab Worker

  • BASIC PURPOSE: Reporting to Program Supervisor, this position provides direct care services to program clients and helps to ensure a calm and appropriate therapeutic environment in the home.

    All duties at FCC are to be carried out in a manner consistent with the agency’s Mission, Vision and Values. All staff are expected to act as representatives of FCC and promote and maintain a positive image. All staff are expected to adhere to all laws of client rights, confidentiality, and privacy as governed by HIPAA, licensing and accreditation standards and FCC policies. All staff must maintain sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics. All staff must maintain regular communication with their supervisor and ensure s/he is properly informed. The statements below describe the general nature of work being performed in this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties and additional responsibilities may be assigned, and required, or certain responsibilities eliminated by management.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Client Activities: In coordination with the Program Supervisor and Clinical Supervisor, develop and implement a schedule of therapeutic and recreational activities for residents.

    2. Daily Client Care: Provide structure, support and daily organization to residents; conduct therapeutic client encounters daily; manage client emotional and behavioral issues using a variety of techniques including but not limited to crisis intervention and de-escalation; assist clients in learning independent living skills; follow and enforce house schedule and all house rules; conduct hourly checks; serve as role model and mentor to new staff; provide client transportation as needed; participate in scheduled floor time; participate in level assessments; participate in the on call schedule; conduct IMR or other groups as directed by Program Supervisor and Clinical Supervisor in accordance with schedule and curriculum; complete daily logs and encounter notes; dispense medications in accordance with legal requirements and house rules. In absence of RN, fill medication minders, order refills and provide medication education to clients as needed. Staff must remain awake during all work hours.

    3. General Team Member Duties: Attend scheduled staff meetings and trainings as required; document therapeutic encounters as required; record client progress toward goal completion in client chart; participate as a member of the treatment team; participate in the development of house policies and procedures in conjunction with management.

    ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ENVIRONMENT:

    Education, Training, Work Experience or Licensure:

    A Mental Health Rehabilitation Worker must:

    • Have a high school diploma or equivalent: and
    • Meet one of the following qualification requirements:
      • Be fluent in the non-English language or competent in the culture of the ethnic group to which at least 20% of the mental health rehabilitation worker’s client’s belong;
      • Have an associates of arts degree;
      • Have two full years of full time postsecondary educations or a total of 15 semester hours or 23 quarter hours in behavior sciences or related fields;
      • Be a registered nurse;
      • Have, within the previous ten years, three years of personal life experience with mental illness;
      • Have, within the previous ten years, three years of life experience as a primary caregiver to an adult with a mental illness, traumatic brain injury, substance use disorder, or developmental disability; or
      • Have, within the previous ten years, 2,000 hours of work experience providing health and human services to individuals.
    • A mental health rehabilitation worker who is scheduled as an overnight staff person and works alone is exempt from the additional qualification requirements in paragraph (2).

    Scope of practice: A mental health rehabilitation worker under the treatment supervision of a mental health professional or certified rehabilitation specialist may provide rehabilitative mental health services to an adult client according to the client's treatment plan

    Specialized Knowledge or Skills: Strong verbal communication skills required; ability to work with and relate to adults with serious mental illness.

    Equipment and Applications:Proficient at personal computer standard applications (Word, Excel, E-mail, etc.) Use of fax and photocopy machine.

    Work Environment and Physical Demands: Residential environment in a two-story Victorian home. Position may require lifting, carrying or moving of items less than 50 lbs. (groceries, small furniture, client belongings, etc.).
