Field Superintendent - Construction jobs in Utah

Field Superintendent - Construction oversees the daily construction activities of contractors, foremen, and workers at a work site to ensure projects follow schedules. Coordinates the procurement, delivery, and placement of materials and equipment on-site as required to execute each phase of a construction project. Being a Field Superintendent - Construction follows construction schedules and monitors daily and weekly progress to ensure project milestones are achieved. Troubleshoots any issues involving workers, contractors, safety, quality, changes, or processes and expedites solutions to keep the project on track. Additionally, Field Superintendent - Construction directs or conducts inspections to audit the quality of workmanship and materials and compliance with specifications and standards. Completes the required status, change, or timekeeping reports. May require a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically reports to a project manager. The Field Superintendent - Construction supervises a group of primarily para-professional level staffs. May also be a level above a supervisor within high volume administrative/production environments. Makes day-to-day decisions within or for a group/small department. Has some authority for personnel actions. To be a Field Superintendent - Construction typically requires 3-5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor.     The following is a brief guide to the responsibilities of a superintendent. This is not an exhaustive list of duties. Your duties will change depending on the project and the project team.

    · Project Documents

    o Study the plans and specs as much as possible.

    o Schedule yourself 10-30 minutes a day to do this.

    o Ask questions, clarify the design (RFI’s, missing scope, compatibility)

    o Review Submittals & RFI’s on the daily. (Don’t just rely on the PE’s)

    o Update As-builts regularly (Do this weekly…It is easy to get behind)

    · Scheduling

    o Develop the schedule to be accurate to the project.

    o Update Weekly…Keep an eye on Critical Path, Float Path, Workflow, & Sequencing.

    o Follow the company requirements for delays and impacts to be shown on the schedule.

    o Keep an updated PDF on you when in the field.

    o Send out schedule reminders at least 3 weeks in advance. Your job is NOT their only job.

    · Daily Logs

    o The more detail the better (Photo’s, Note’s, Procore phone logs, attachments)

    o Schedule yourself time each day.

    o These are required daily.

    · Housekeeping

    o Establish the expectation from day one.

    o Use the contract if necessary (Hold subs accountable)

    o Give assignments to the trades. (Stop work if needed)

    o A safe site is SIRQ’s responsibility. (Everyone should go home safe)

    · Jobsite Leader

    o Lead by example (Lead from the front, show confidence)

    o Mentor/Teach all on site (Learn from the trades)

    o Maintain Positive relationships (Trades don’t have to love you, they need to trust you)

    o YOU call the shots, not the trades.

    · Training

    o Attend Monthly SIRQ Super trainings (90%)

    o Visit other SIRQ sites (See what others are doing)

    o Hone your craft (Ask for help, learn through books, trainings)

    o Speak up (Ask for trainings that may benefit you & others)

    · Follow Through

    o Do what you say you will do.

    o Follow though & report back.

    o Don’t be afraid to call someone out.

    o Hold yourself & others accountable

    o Create respect with the teams.

    · Preplanning

    o Always Plan ahead (Be Ready for anything, be proactive, look ahead)

    o Be Aggressive (Don’t sit back & wait, plan now)

    o See the Future (Know your jobsite, drawings, schedule & trades)

    o Study your Jobsite (Stand back & take a 30,000-foot view. You will see roadblocks & flow)

    o Have Plans A, B, & C Ready to go.

    · Software Management

    o Become an Expert (Procore, Phoenix, Bluebeam, Excel, Word, Emails)

    o Get Training.

    o Train others.

    o Be open minded (We don’t know what we don’t know)

    · To Do List

    o Create a Task List you use daily. (Set a reminder to go through your list)

    o Find a system that works for you (Note pad, apps, calendars)

    o Go over this list daily for Critical Items (What’s hot for today?)

    o You will miss things if you do not track them.

    · Daily Huddles / Trade Coordination

    o This is your meeting (You are in control of the meeting)

    o Talk Schedule (Critical upcoming dates & milestones)

    o Always be prepared for this meeting (Plan for this meeting, have an agenda)

    o Set the expectation for this early (Start & end on time)

    o Hold Trades & SIRQ accountable.

    o Track constrains (Roadblocks, Who/What is the roadblock & due dates)

    · Job Walks – Daily / Safety / QC / Schedule

    o Schedule yourself time for these walks.

    o Focused walks with No distractions. (Don’t let others steal your time)

    o Walk multiple times a day (Don’t just sit in the trailer)

    o Send out corrections & assignments.

    o Know what’s going on, on your site.

    · Quality Control

    o Set the expectation early on

    o Know what is being installed.

    o Inspections (Your goal, no rework)

    o Ask questions (The trades should be the experts)

    o Trust your instinct (The job will talk to you)
