    Financial Aid Counselor, Student Financial Services - Georgetown University


    Georgetown's Office of Student Financial Services provides counseling and application processing services to 14,500 potential and current undergraduate and graduate applicants for aid each year in scholarship, loan, and work programs.

    The Financial Aid Counselor delivers counseling services to current and prospective students and their families regarding the financial aid process, procedures, and program rules, including information about all federal, state, private, and institutional loan, grant and work programs. For students with last names beginning with letters A through D, they are responsible for preliminary review and processing of financial aid applications, maintenance of all financial aid records, and for written and verbal communication with students to ensure the highest standards of customer/client services and support established procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and University policies; they also support established procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and university policies.

    This position will enable the financial aid counselor to further develop a career path, as they will be actively changing and streamlining processes. By working closely with peers they will be able to sharpen their skills; elevate their knowledge while taking on more responsibilities and tasks. The mobility within the Department of Financial Services allows employees to promote within the field of interest or change their career path.

    Reporting to the Associate Director for Student Financial Services in one of six such roles, the Financial Aid Counselor has duties that include but are not limited to:


    Administration of Financial Aid
    • Performs a central role in enrollment management and is an integral part of the admissions process as it relates to determining and explaining financial aid possibilities to prospective and enrolled students.
    • Works closely with students with special circumstances. Counsels and communicates with students and their families and the general public regarding all aspects of student financial assistance, all federal financial aid regulations and University policies, specific aid program characteristics, individual award decisions and revisions, and the role of financial aid awards in the payment of educational expenses.
    • Provides aid applications analysis and interprets instructions to students and parents.
    • Demonstrates working knowledge of tax returns as it relates to understanding "real" income.
    • Explains the calculation of the student's and/or family's contribution towards their cost of attendance.
    • Attends career development seminars and participates in community outreach programs.



    Quality Assurance in Awarding of Financial Aid
    • Reviews, evaluates and processes aid applications.
    • Calculates eligibility for financial aid & monitors existing student financial aid files
    • Constant monitoring of existing files to ensure their status is up to date



    Communication, Consultation, and Resolution
    • Communicates with several departments in regards to ensure timely disbursement; any problems; interprets student's account activity and prepares presentations to other departments to ensure efficient orientation processes.
    • Upholds the university policy of confidentiality of student records and other provisions of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
    • Supports the undergraduate and graduate admissions processes by providing information to Admissions staff regarding the status of individual aid applications.



    Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree
    • Part-time or full-time work experience with counseling, customer service, and/or administrative support
    • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data and to use independent judgment where appropriate
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse client population, and commitment to continuous quality improvement and customer services.
    • Experience with and knowledge of PC based administrative software



    Preferred Qualifications
    • Any combination of experience with Ellucian's Banner, COGNOS, and/or Microsoft Office
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and/or institutional financial aid program rules, regulations, or processes

    Pay: $24.28 per hour
