The Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit Public Defender’s Office is seeking to hire several Assistant Public Defenders. The primary responsibilities include handling felonies and misdemeanors in Superior Court, as well as possible work in Recorder’s Court, Juvenile and Specialty Courts. It is preferred that applicants be a member of the Georgia State Bar, but the office is open to hiring a candidate under a provisional practice license while awaiting bar results.

• The Assistant Public Defender will provide competent and zealous representation and advocacy to indigent clients.
• This position performs professional legal work and may assist in criminal cases of routine complexity.
• Performs other related duties as required.

• Preference for someone with excellent caseload management skills, the ability to work independently, minimum amount of trial experience, ability to handle arraignments and pretrial conferences, and ability to read and spot issues in discovery and file appropriate motions, if any.

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, or stooping. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

• Balancing – maintain equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.

• Reaching – extending hands or arms in any direction.
• Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of wrists, hands, fingers.
• Speaking – expressing ideas with spoken word, convey detailed, important instructions accurately, concisely.
• Standing – for sustained periods of time.
• Stooping – bending body downward, forward at waist, with full motion of lower extremities and back.

• Talking 2 – shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
• Visual Acuity 1 - prepare, analyze data, transcribing, computer terminal, extensive reading.
• Visual Acuity 4 - operate motor vehicles/heavy equipment.
• Walking - on foot to accomplish tasks, long distances, or site to site.
