FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a FIRE CAPTAIN typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.   • SUMMARY

    The Soboba Fire Captain performs professional level work in supervising activities of the emergency units assigned; performs supervisory and technical work in fire suppression; emergency rescue, hazardous materials, fire inspection, and code enforcement; training activities and emergency medical services; conducts public relations activities; and other related duties as assigned.

    DUTIES AND RESPONISBILITIES

    Although other duties may be assigned, the essential duties include the following:

    • Plan, organize, direct, and control the employees assigned to the station to meet the required objectives which they may have been charged with the authority and responsibility to implement.
    • Continually upgrade own skills and abilities. Responsible to train subordinates in skills required to combat emergencies. Establish a program of drills for all personnel to maintain proficiency.
    • Responsible to see that all facilities and grounds are maintained in a safe, sanitary and well-groomed at all times.
    • Responsible to suppress all fires in a safe, skilled and professional manner. As First-In Company Officer, Captains are responsible for acting as Incident Commanders and must establish strategy and tactics for resolving the situation. Must implement personnel and equipment to accomplish objectives.
    • Responsible for inspections for hazard reduction of all Tribal owned buildings and residents. Establish an information program with staff influence. Have an aggressive education program.
    • Responsible to see that all automotive and fire equipment is maintained according to required schedules and ready to respond to all emergencies.
    • Responsible to see that all incidents’ reports, station log, and all other monthly reports are clear, comprehensive and meet deadlines.

    KNOWLEDGE:

    • Principles, practices, and procedures of modern firefighting and protection of life and property.
    • Operation of apparatus and equipment. Rules, regulations, and operational procedures of the Soboba Fire Department in modern firefighting operations.
    • Supervision and evaluation of employee development and training, emergency, medical care, local geography, including the location of water sources, hazard areas, and specific response areas of the department.
    • Knowledge of County Emergency operational Plan and local response areas.

    ABILITY:

    • Communicate oral and written instructions in English under stress making sound decisions.
    • Effectively direct personnel.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with superiors, peers, subordinates, and the public assistance agencies.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

    The following attributes are required:

    • High School Diploma or GED. Any combination of training, experience, and education which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
    • Formal or informal education training at a level which ensures the ability to perform mathematical computations and written reports at a level necessary for successful job performance.
    • Minimum of seven years' experience in the fire service.

    LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS:

    • CDL (class C with FF Endorsement & driving record acceptable to the Soboba Tribe)
    • EMR or EMT or Paramedic
    • CPR
    • SFM FF-I
    • Driver Operator I-A, I-B
    • Haz Mat FRO
    • Haz Mat IC
    • CA State Fire Officer Certificate or Equivalent
