FIRE CAPTAIN manages a team of firefighters. Ensures all equipment is properly maintained and serviced. Being a FIRE CAPTAIN directs training and conditioning activities. Administers the staff work schedule to ensure adequate coverage. Additionally, FIRE CAPTAIN leads and coordinates responses to fire events, hazardous material incidents, auto accidents, and search and rescue operations. Prepares post-incident reports as required. Leads or coordinates fire safety education and inspection activities. Typically is required to pass periodic physical ability tests. May require registry in NREMT. Typically requires an associate degree in fire science. Requires Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - Basic. Typically reports to a manager. The FIRE CAPTAIN manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a FIRE CAPTAIN typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. (a) Three years with the Burnsville Fire Department at the time of application
(b) Five years of Fire and EMS experience
(c) Associates Degree or equivalent (equivalent approved by Fire Chief or his/her
designee prior to application) in Fire Administration or related field (not a paramedic
degree, related field degree approved by Fire Chief or his/her designee prior to
application)
(d) Firefighter II Certification (IFSAC or ProBoard)
(e) Current Blue Card Command Certification
(f) Current Minnesota Firefighter License
(g) Current and Valid Driver's License
(h) NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800
(i) Working knowledge of RMS system, Microsoft Office products, and other computer
systems that are currently used in the department
(j) Attain and document a 3.0 or greater Firefighter Fitness Index score for their age group
within the past year from the time of application
(k) The last performance review is fully qualified and satisfactory
(l) Applicants successfully completed the Right Seat Checklist with their captain or have
been appointed as an Acting Captain
(m) Applicants must provide proof of meeting the requirements listed above to participate
in the testing portion of the process
