    The LA County Board of Supervisors recently declared a local state of emergency for homelessness, and the County is working to revise and expand our response to help all who are affected. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of addressing issues like housing, mental health, and substance use.     County of Los Angeles Fire Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Head, Fire Prevention Engineer vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.

    Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

    Before the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance.  This assessment will be weighted 100%.  

    Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Head, Fire Prevention Engineer

    DEFINITION:
    Directs the section of the Fire Department engaged in enforcing fire protection codes and regulations.

    CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS:
    The one position allocable to this class directs the Fire Prevention Engineering Section of the Fire Department under the administrative supervision of the Fire Marshal of the County of Los Angeles. The incumbent works independently, without technical supervision, and is responsible for directing the section engaged in enforcing fire protection codes and regulations. The incumbent must possess fire protection engineering expertise developed through highly responsible experience performing professional fire protection engineering duties. Incumbents in this class must exercise extensive knowledge of national, state and local fire codes and regulations, fire hazardous materials, and building plan reading. The incumbent must also exercise knowledge of the principles of management, budget, and personnel practices in carrying out work assignments.
    • Plans, assigns, directs and evaluates the work of the section.
    • Directs the enforcement of fire protection codes and regulations through review of project plans and field inspections to assure standards are met for fire flow, fire access, public assembly exit requirements, specialized fire protection systems, etc.
    • Reviews new trends in fire protection engineering for improvement of fire protection standards and section operation.
    • Develops and maintains liaison with other governmental agencies involved in fire prevention and safety.
    • Directs training and supervision of staff in the technical aspects of fire prevention including application of codes and regulations, approval of building plans, review of land division maps, and approval of water system plans.
    • Researches, reviews and recommends changes to codes and ordinances.
    • Provides technical direction in the analysis of highly complex fire protection problems and approves alternative systems designed to meet compliance with fire codes and ordinances.
    • Reviews, analyzes, and makes recommendations on environmental impact reports to ensure that adequate fire and life safety provisions are included.
    • Directs studies and research activities assigned to the section and prepares reports and recommendations for the fire marshal.
    • Prepares the section's annual budget and recommendations for presentation to the fire marshal.
    • Works in an assigned support capacity during major emergency incidents.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
    Certificate of Registration* as a Fire Protection Engineer -AND- Four years professional fire protection engineering experience, two years of which must have been at the level of Fire Prevention Engineer**.

    No out-of-class experience will be accepted.


    LICENSE:
    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:
    Physical Class III - This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working or irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
