    Job Description:

    Title: Building Maintenance / Environmental Services

    Classification: Full-time, Non-exempt, 40 hours/week

    Reports to: Warehouse Manager

    Salary Range: $11.00 - $14.00/Hour

    Mission:

    The Food Bank of Northern Indiana works in partnership with the community to feed the hungry, increase awareness of the effects of hunger and lead programs designed to alleviate hunger. The Food Bank serves Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties and is a member of Feeding America and Feeding Indiana’s Hungry.

    Job Summary:

    The Environmental Services / Maintenance role is responsible for keeping the FBNI facility spaces and grounds clean and welcoming for our staff and community members. This position is also responsible for a moderate level of building repairs.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    1) Maintains neat and orderly janitorial storage areas (such as outside yard tools, inside staging area of brooms, dry mops, wet floor signs, etc. in all janitors’ closets), and ensures cleaning and maintenance supplies are stocked.

    2) Performs routine maintenance on power equipment to ensure equipment is in proper working order and available for use.

    3) Performing general cleaning of building flooring/steps by sweeping, mopping, shampooing rugs, floor scrubber and vacuuming.

    4) Washing walls and windows.

    5) Maintain cleaning chart, indicating areas that were cleaned and inspected.

    6) Maintain and keep clean all basic equipment used to perform duties including vacuums, scrubbers, buckets, etc.

    7) Maintaining cobweb control and dusting throughout the building.

    8) Ensuring proper usage and understanding of all chemicals used to perform job.

    9) Checking mouse traps on a bi-weekly schedule, logging any findings, replacing any glue boards or traps if needed, ensuring correct date is labeled.

    10) Notifying management about unsafe conditions or concerning the need for repairs or maintenance.

    11) Perform minor to moderate building repairs as required.

    12) Overseeing volunteers when assigned to assist with projects from beginning to end.

    13) Inspecting all fire extinguishers monthly; log and report any findings.

    14) Inspect all exit lighting monthly; report any findings or change any light bulbs if needed.

    15) Changing all furnace filters monthly.

    16) Maintain the Material Safety Data Sheet Book.

    17) Manage routine upkeep of exterior areas including grass cutting, weed control, brush trimming, debris picked up on property, snow shoveling/plowing on sidewalks and entry ways, spreading of salt/sand to prevent ice buildup as needed.

    18) Monthly moving and cleaning of skid areas.

    19) Handling any emergency clean up and upkeep requests.

    20) Clean all bathrooms, boardrooms, breakrooms, and front office area (dusting, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, cleaning windows, etc.)

    21) Clean and sanitize touchable areas such as tables, chairs, cabinet handles, door handles, flusher handles on toilets, light switches, paper towel dispensers, sinks, soap dispensers, stall locks, tables, water coolers, window ledges, etc.

    22) Clean and stock necessary supplies in supply designated facility areas.

    23) Empty and dispose of all trash from designated facility areas (warehouse, bathrooms, boardrooms, breakrooms, and front office). Wipe down trash cans as needed.

    24) Refill paper towel and toilet paper dispensers, bar towels in the kitchen and soap dispensers.

    25) Follow health and safety regulations.

    26) Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    Minimum Qualifications for Education, Training and Experience:

    • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
    • Two to four years of custodial, groundskeeper, or building maintenance related experience.

    · Ability to operate various types of power equipment including lawnmowers, trimmers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment. Ability to operate mechanical floor scrubber and buffer. Ability to learn other equipment as needed.

    · Knowledge of landscaping techniques and processes.

    · Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions.

    Required Background, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    · Self -motivated with the ability to see what needs to be done and to follow through until all work is satisfactorily completed.

    · Ability to work independently.

    · Ability to manage time effectively and to multitask.

    · Ability to communicate effectively.

    • Ability to perform basic math, maintain records and write legibly.

    · Good organizational skills and attention to detail.

    · Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.

    · Ability to perform basic repairs and operate tools or equipment used in routine building maintenance.

    · Ability to keep the facility and grounds clean and orderly.

    Working Conditions:

    This position requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing and crouching. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds with assistance or use of equipment. This position works in extreme temperature changes involving freezer and refrigeration units.

    Employment requires a negative drug screening, and successful background check.
