Forest Carbon Works (www.forestcarbonworks.org), a company that enables small forest landowners in the U.S. to access the carbon offset market, is hiring for the position of a Forest Technician. The position is contract-based with potential for a long-term position.
The Technician’s primary responsibility will be to collect forest carbon inventory data using our proprietary smartphone inventory device. Technicians will have the opportunity to explore local forests and/or travel to nearby states for field work. Data collection consists of navigating to allocated "plots" within a forested property and taking photographic inventory of all trees located within each plot.
The Technician will also work remotely with staff members that are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Technician will regularly communicate and report to staff via phone or email about the progress of the project, questions, or concerns.
Specific tasks will include traveling to property sites; corresponding with client landowners; collecting forest inventory data using our smartphone device on all assigned plots; and maintaining regular communication with program staff. Camping overnight may be required on specific projects; this information will be available for all projects in advance. The Technician is required to have a reliable vehicle for work-related travel. Applicants will attend a remote training session led by Forest Carbon Works staff and complete an online quiz.
Technicians are paid between $200 to $325 per day (more details upon hire). Compensation varies between projects and is determined based on terrain, size of project, and remoteness. Mileage reimbursement is available for this position and will be reimbursed at the current IRS Standard Mileage Reimbursement rate.
This is a part-time, at-will position. As a contract position with fluctuating work availability, this position is intended to serve as a supplementary source of income, rather than a permanent or consistent income source. Work availability is ever-changing and, as at-will employment work is not necessarily guaranteed. This position does not offer benefits, vacation, or paid leave. Reimbursement for travel time or lodging is not eligible for this position.
