Forest Aide gathers and analyzes data regarding overall condition of forest tracts. May provide supervision to seasonal workers. Being a Forest Aide educates visitors on forest policies and regulations. Requires a high school diploma with 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Additionally, Forest Aide has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Forest sampling as part of the state land inventory program. Includes location of sample points by compass and tape or GPS, Sampling trees with a prism and angle gauge, measuring standing timber, recording existing vegetation, wildlife signs and other pertinent information, construction of field maps and data input into computer programs.
Assist in marking and tallying trees in preparation for timber sales.
Forest stand improvement activities such as pre-commercial thinning with chainsaws and brush-saws.
Trail and access road maintenance.
Boundary line maintenance
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Associates degree or its equivalent from a recognized college or technical institute with a major study in forestry.
Experience: No experience required.
License/Certification: Must possess a valid driver’s license and insurance as well as reliable transportation.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Knowledge of maps, compass GPS/GIS and other forest measurement tools; ability to walk long distances on rough terrain. Proficient with the proper maintenance and safe operation of chainsaws and other power equipment. Working knowledge of basic forest management practices and procedures, and silviculture. Ability to carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to supervise subordinate employees. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel and other employees. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing authority.
