General Laborer
General Description
The general laborer's job is to familiarize himself with all the job parameters, and to handle all the tools, equipment and material to take care of anything when needed. The general laborer has many responsibilities alongside the mill, the rollers, screed of the paver, chipper and several other machines, while making safety one of his top priorities. His/her overall job is to advance himself to the next level.
Required Duties
The duties of the general laborer include, but are not limited to:
Make sure the crew trucks are stocked appropriately with the tools, equipment, controls, traffic signs, cones, water, gas, propane and whatever else is needed for the days work.
Fueling equipment, trucks and machinery.
Fill water trucks, tac pots, sealer tanks and any other truck that may haul liquid.
Drive a single axel dump truck (must have the ability to dump the truck).
Haul small equipment on a trailer such as a skid steer, roller, mini x, etc.
Fill out gas sheets.
Grease equipment when needed.
Load and unload tools at job site.
Clean and prepare job for paving.
Set up and traffic signs or cones that may be needed.
Saw cut, sweep, blow and Tac headers at the beginning and end of job.
When Patching stay ahead of crew to saw cut patches.
Hold the hose whenever needed (Spraying tac, water, etc).
Directing traffic in a safe and timely manner.
Help launch pad of the beginning of each pull.
Be a watchdog for the mat. Provide shovels of asphalt whenever and wherever needed for the luteman.
Use hand tamp in areas roller man can't fit.
Keep asphalt joint clean for roller man.
Direct dump trucks when they are empty.
Help paving operator analyze amount of mix left in dump truck.
Collect all tolls at the end of the day.
Clean tools, equipment and other materials at the end of the day.
Make sure the job site is clean before leaving.
Physical Demands
Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
Ability to lift, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds and carry at least 30 pounds personally, and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
Work long days with minimal breaks.
Working Environment
Work is almost always performed outside in various weather conditions.
The work environment sometimes exposes employees to loud noises, large amounts of dust, the smell of asphalt or tar and several other things.
Employees work close to heavy machinery and equipment that can be dangerous if not alert.
Work environment can leave employees with dirty hands, dirty face, dirty clothes and other things.
Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
