Genetics Counselor provides genetic counseling and education to individuals and families at risk for hereditary disorders. Obtains and analyzes family medical history to identify patients at risk for specific disorders or syndromes. Being a Genetics Counselor recommends genetic testing as warranted and counsels patients on test results, treatment and alternative coping methods. May provide crisis intervention as needed. Additionally, Genetics Counselor requires a master's degree of Genetic Counseling. Typically reports to a manager or director. Requires board certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). Typically requires a state license to practice. Job Description/Summary:
The purpose of this position is to provide comprehensive genetic counseling services for pediatric clinics. Provide teaching and supervision services as needed for pediatric residents and genetic counseling students rotating through the division. Coordinate special projects, programs and or/ clinics within assigned services. Participate in the development of new programs and their implementation.
Position Requirements:
Minimum Education: Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling from an American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) accredited training program.
Minimum Experience: Experience in a medical or other clinical setting, preferably in a medical genetics clinical service.
License Required: Genetic Counselor Licensure in the state of California
Certification Required: Boards certified or board eligible Genetic Counseling, ABMG or ABCG
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Effective written and verbal skills. Excellent leadership skills
Technical Knowledge: Proficiency with PC word-processing, spreadsheets. Prior experience with electronic medical records (EMR) preferred.
Medical Staff Membership Required: Must apply for and be approved to hold the privilege for Genetic Counselor as defined by UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Medical Staff Office, and must remain in good standing in that category.
