    Our Water & Technology GIS Team is seeking a GIS Analyst Intern - Summer 2024 to work out of our Knoxville, TN or Nashville, TN office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2024 or later.

    This 12 week internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program that is scheduled to start on May 20th, 2024. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.

    Your Impact

    • Perform GIS database development, qualitative/quantitative analysis, and mapping as a member of various water resources (including floodplain mapping) and environmental services project teams
    • Produce detailed, high-quality cartographic products (digital and hardcopy) and accompanying reports in accordance with technical guidelines and client needs
    • Communicate with project team members and other stakeholders to define data needs, project requirements, and desired outputs
    • Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources including public domain, field collection, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps
    • Perform regular quality control checks of GIS Data and non-spatial databases with minimal supervision to ensure data integrity
    • Manage individual project tasks related to GIS, database design and management, and data visualization
    • Customize GIS workflow and software programs for data collection, engineering, and environmental applications
    • Support a variety of tasks with the goal to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
    • Learn basic principles of geospatial technology and application.
    • Assist with project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
    • Support preparation of final design plans, special provisions, and cost estimates.
    • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
    • Complete training on assigned tasks.
    • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
    • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
    • Please note that there is no relocation or housing assistance associated with this internship.

    Who You Are

    Required Qualifications

    • Actively enrolled in an accredited Geography, Cartography, Engineering, Coastal or Marine science, Planning, Resource Management including fish or wildlife, Biological, Physical, or Computer sciences or related, Undergraduate program. 
    • Demonstrated interest in GIS, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP’s work and projects.
    • Proficiency using ESRI ArcGIS software.
    • Proficiency using Microsoft Office.
    • Resourceful and self-motivated.
    • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
    • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
    • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
    • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
    • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

    Preferred Qualifications

     • Actively enrolled in an accredited Geography, Cartography, Engineering, Coastal or Marine Science, Planning, Resource Management including fish or wildlife, Biological, Physical, or Computer Sciences or related, Masters or PhD program. 
    • Experience with FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program.
    • Experience with municipal stormwater management.
    • Customization of GIS software using Python.
    • Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.
