The Golf Course Superintendent oversees continued development of golf course during golf season to improve playing conditions and maintenance of course during off-season. Incumbent serves as Golf Course Equipment Foreman for the Mishawaka Parks and Recreation Department, responsible performing all golf course equipment operation, maintenance, and repair duties necessary for golf course operations.
DUTIES:
- Performs mechanical servicing on golf course equipment.
- Maintains equipment and parts inventory and orders equipment and parts.
- Repairs equipment breakdowns and gives recommendations on status of equipment. Reviews sub-contracted equipment repair.
- Oversees and repairs golf riding carts.
- Supervises and directs the work of assigned personnel, including planning/delegating/controlling work assignments.
- Performs general golf course duties, including, but not limited to, mowing, cup cutting, irrigation repair, trimming, aeration, painting, light carpentry, and light plumbing.
- Maintains shop area and tools.
- Mixes chemicals.
- Interacts with the public to promote golf course and Department and to answer questions.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- High school diploma or HSE with mechanical experience at a golf course.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to meet all hiring requirements including passage of a written exam.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department safety policies and procedures and applicable OSHA safety policies and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply practices and procedures of operation, maintenance, and repair of various golf course equipment and tools.
- Practical knowledge of mechanics, with plumbing and electrical skills.
- Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, with ability to read instructions/work orders and prepare documents, correspondence, and reports.
- Ability to properly operate various light equipment and hand/power tools, including, but not limited to, hammer, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, air vice, power saws, ball blower, air nozzle, air compressor, deburring/deflashing tools, mop, broom, gauges, files, micrometer, edger, driver, ratchet, steam cleaner, calipers, weed eater, chain saw, various mowers, aerator, sprayer, and other equipment as needed.
- Ability to properly operate medium or specialized equipment and tools, including pallet jack, grinder, pressure washer, drill press, cutting torch, delivery truck, dump truck, riding carts, tractor with attachments, 3-wheel motorcycle, pull trailer, and welding equipment.
- Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing more than 50 pounds, handling/grasping/fingering objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, driving, close/far vision, color and depth perception, hearing sounds/ communication, and speaking clearly. Effort is exerted regularly, strain may be intense, and moderate physical dexterity is required.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs a variety of duties, with work schedules and priorities determined by supervisor. Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods/procedures.
Assignments follow standard operating procedures or policy and procedural manuals, and employee must have supervisor’s permission to deviate. Incumbent has moderate flexibility in the job.
Incumbent reports directly to Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.

Incumbent's duties involve sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling objects weighing more than 50 pounds, handling/grasping/fingering objects, crouching/kneeling, bending/reaching, driving, close/far vision, color and depth perception, hearing sounds/communication, and speaking clearly. Effort is exerted regularly, strain may be intense, and moderate physical dexterity is required.
IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties outdoors and in a garage/shop, involving working in wet/icy surroundings and extreme hot/cold temperatures, working near chemicals and fumes/odors/dust/dirt, noise, and working in confined areas and high places. Safety precautions must be followed at all times, including wearing protective clothing or equipment. Incumbent responds to emergencies from off-duty status and responds to situations involving potential physical harm to self/others.
Incumbent is occasionally required to work extended hours.
