  • Position Summary:

    The Graphic Design and Media Specialist supports internal and external communications for the synagogue and the digital congregant experience, primarily by aiding the Communications Manager in the creation of Congregation Emanu-El’s marketing elements. This position requires proficiency in graphic design, video editing, and web development. The Media Production Assistant is comfortable creating a variety of print and digital media following an organizational style and with high output, and they are quick to pick up new, interconnected digital tools and systems. During construction (until fall of 2025), this position is primarily remote, with the requirement to attend certain meetings, programs, and events in person.

Emanu-El is the fifth largest Jewish Reform congregation in the United States, with 1850 households, and is the oldest Jewish congregation west of the Mississippi. Officially established in 1850, and located in a landmark temple in San Francisco, Emanu-El serves as a foundation of community life for Jews and non-Jews, for members and non-members, with innovative programs in worship, community, and education that span the cycles and events of life. In 2025, after an extensive capital project to revitalize our historic building and to expand our ability to meet the strategic goal of being a welcoming and accessible home to all Jews throughout the Bay Area, we will be reopening our doors and expanding our programs to serve the evolving needs of our Jewish community.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assist the Communications Manager in the creation of routine digital media such as event graphics, website assets, and social media imagery.
    • Draft recurring marketing elements such as single-event eBlasts and flyers for review while assisting the Communications Manager in larger-scale marketing campaigns and marketing efforts as-needed, and ultimately taking control of individual marketing pathways to be specified such as certain focus groups’ newsletters and/or standard print materials.
    • Examples of this work include, but are not limited to, creating occasional flyers to be passed out at Shabbat services and key events, assisting in the creation of the weekly Shabbat services handout, and doing basic layout work for our monthly print magazine, the Emanu-El SF Chronicle.
    • Assist the Communications Manager in the maintenance and improvement of our organization-wide asset library.
    • Support the Communications Manager in communications request intake via email, Microsoft Teams messaging, and in meetings.
    • Execute the social media portion of marketing campaigns as designed by the Communications Manager and associated staff, following a basic organizational style and using content created by you, the Communications Manager, or collaboratively with other staff members.
    • Attend occasional events and engagement offerings (key holidays, guest speakers at Shabbat services, hybrid classes or events) to assist onsite staff with tech, help direct photographers and other vendors as-needed, and take additional photo and video.
    • Work with our facilities team to set up marketing collateral such as vinyl banners and poster boards
    • Provide periodic support for hybrid communications/meetings

    Essential Skills/Abilities:

    • Proficiency with Canva and the Adobe Creative Cloud suite for graphic design, document layout, and video editing. Intermediate photography/videography skills are a plus.
    • Familiarity with email builders such as Constant Contact or MailChimp preferred, specific knowledge of Marketing Cloud (which Emanu-El uses) is a plus but not required.
    • Proficiency navigating dense file archives and attention to detail while managing organizational assets.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Teams (including Teams Rooms and Teams Live).
    • Experience with Salesforce and Salesforce’s member portal, Experience Cloud.
    • Maintaining flexibility and level-headedness when receiving programmatic and marketing information across departments, often at the same time.
    • Maintaining flexibility and level-headedness during live hybrid events and meetings, with ability to troubleshoot calmly and discreetly.
    • Strong communication skills and comfort meeting different types of Jewish professionals at their preferred communication style and pathway.
    • Communications personnel interface with every department and with employees at every level, including senior leadership and clergy. Sociability and respectful communication is crucial.
    • Familiarity with Jewish culture, particularly holiday practices and relevant imagery, is preferred but not required. Knowledge of Hebrew not required.

    • Proactive about teaching yourself elements of Jewish culture as-needed to execute your work.

    • Somebody who is comfortable learning new applications and systems, such as our Salesforce CRM and Member Portal built in Experience Cloud.
    • Somebody who will keep current with software updates and UI changes for online platforms like Microsoft Teams.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in a communications-related field required, with a focus on visual art, media production, or technology preferred.
    • High level digital literacy and proficiency in media production software including the Adobe Creative Cloud suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and Canva, as well as WordPress, CRM/database systems (Salesforce preferred), Marketing Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Microsoft Office 365 (particularly Teams).
    • Physical Requirements:
    • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
    • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
    • Must be able to access various departments of a given location.
