Purpose of the Lead Aircraft Mechanic
This position with the client's Atmospheric Science Department is an exciting opportunity for a talented and motivated individual to join an internationally regarded research and instrument development team. This multi-faceted position will require expert knowledge in aviation maintenance to install complex-level research payloads under limited supervision.
Lead the maintenance and repair operations for University research and transportation aircraft; service, repaire, overhaule, inspect, test, and maintain aircraft and aircraft engines to ensure air-worthiness; assisted with planning, designing, and modifying aircraft structure or components for research projects; provide detailed records; maintain safety data sheets; purchase aircraft parts, maintain spare parts and ground support equipment inventory; provide schedules/supervises maintenance and aircraft modification services.
Essential Duties of The Lead Aircraft Mechanic
- Maintain knowledge of and follow all applicable aviation regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations.
- Produce and maintain all applicable FAA certification documentation of all modifications, maintenance, major repairs, major alterations, field approvals, and supplemental type certificates installed on university aircraft in the appropriate aircraft logbook within the limits of the individual’s licensed authority.
- Perform maintenance and modification work as lead aircraft mechanic, performing service, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, inspection, testing, and general preventive maintenance to ensure the airworthiness of aircraft.
- To ensure flight safety and readiness, coordinate schedules with flight operations, provide timely maintenance schedules for work done internally or by outside personnel.
- Establish maintenance safety rules and procedures.
- Design, fabricate, and install equipment on research aircraft.
- Maintain spare parts and ground support equipment inventory; purchase equipment and supplies as directed.
- Perform required maintenance inspections per OEM maintenance manuals.
- Responsible for AOG aircraft and returning aircraft to service.

Minimum Requirements:

EDUCATION: Vocational School, On-the-Job Experience, or Associate’s Degree

EXPERIENCE: 5 years of work-related experience, including at least 2 years experience with King Air series aircraft.

LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.
- Federal Aviation Administration Airframe License and Power Plant Mechanic's License
- Federal Aviation Administration Inspection Authorization certification
- Experience completing Major Repairs and Alterations (Airframe, Powerplant, Propeller, or Appliance)
Desired Qualifications:
- 9 years of work-related experience
- Special mission aircraft experience
- Experience interacting with FAA Designated Engineering Representatives (DER)
- Familiarity with Major Alterations using DER-approved data
- Repair station experience
- Formal maintenance training with King Air B200/B300
- Experience with electronic logbooks (Sierra Trax, CAMPS) and weight & balance records (Tdata)
Travel Requirements:
This position involves working on national and international field projects with occasional hours outside the normal workday, including evenings, weekends, and occasional travel throughout the year.
Working Conditions:
Aircraft hangar environment: regularly exposed to dirt, dust, noise, fumes, odors, confined spaces, and poor lighting; subject to fire, mechanical, and chemical hazards.
