Head Nurse - Oncology directs nursing service activities for assigned oncology patients. Delegates responsibilities to oncology staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of oncology patient clinical records, and writes reports on oncology staff performance and services rendered. Being a Head Nurse - Oncology maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing. Additionally, Head Nurse - Oncology requires Registered Nurse (RN). Typically reports to a director. The Head Nurse - Oncology manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Head Nurse - Oncology typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1-3 years supervisory experience may be required. This position is accountable for the provision of safe, efficient, and therapeutically effective care on the patient care unit to which assigned. Utilizing the nursing process, care is delivered in compliance with hospital policies and procedures, legal, and regulatory standards. Provides nursing care to patients receiving oncology therapy and assists the doctor in triaging patients and special procedures. Stays current with medical oncology standards of care.
Job Requirements:
Must hold or obtain current licensure as a Registered Nurse with the Idaho State Board of Nursing.
Must have completed ONS Fundamentals of Chemotherapy Biotherapy Administration course. The ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy Certificate must be obtained within six months.
Must hold or obtain current BLS.
Must have knowledge of oncology therapy and understand the principles of the use of chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer.
Must have an understanding of sequel related to treatment to include issues of toxicity and systemic reactions.
Remain current with center-wide occupational education programs.
Must attend and participate in departmental and Center-wide meeting and committees as they relate to Medical Oncology.
Must be able to take verbal instruction and practically apply it without direct supervision.
