Head Nurse - Psychiatric Unit directs nursing service activities for assigned patients in the psychiatric unit. Delegates responsibilities to auxiliary and psychiatric staff nurses; supervises preparation and maintenance of psychiatric patient clinical records, and writes reports on psychiatric staff performance and services rendered. Being a Head Nurse - Psychiatric Unit maintains pre-set inventory standards for solutions, supplies, medicines and equipment, and keeps track of narcotics. Requires a bachelor's degree in nursing.     This position provides routine and emergency psychiatric care, on-call assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of offenders in a correctional clinical setting.

    Responsibilities will be, but not limited to:

    • conducting psychiatric examinations;
    • ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests and diagnosing psychiatric conditions;
    • prescribing medications and treatment;
    • educating patients about preventive health care;
    • providing psychiatric services to a daily patient caseload including follow-up, referrals, emergencies and intakes;
    • position participates in the "on-call" schedule and may provide on-site assistance to other DOC clinical units and facilities when demonstrated staffing needs arise;
    • providing instruction, demonstration and training to other health care professionals;
    • providing psychiatric advice to other organizational units or health care specialties through consultation regarding patients or protocols;
    • position ensures that computer data entry, referrals and consultations, medical reporting, medical co-signature and offender grievance requirements are completed in accordance with DOC policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
    • maintaining problem lists in offenders' health records, identifying, applying and updating housing and work restrictions and obtaining authorization for consultations, diagnostic procedures, or other orders per department policy and clinical standards;
    • position responsible for attending quarterly medical review board meetings, monthly provider meetings and other division meetings as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Licenses and Certification:

    • Applicant must be licensed to practice as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the State of South Dakota as outlined by the appropriate regulating board.
    • Applicant must be certified to practice as a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner as outlined by the appropriate regulating board.

    Required Competencies:

    • ability to provide direct patient care to offenders;
    • knowledgeable in full-spectrum primary care;
    • skilled in office based procedures;
    • ability to maintain professionalism in a complex environment;
    • excellent written and verbal communication skills;
    • excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders;
    • ability to read and comprehend the English language;
    • ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing
    • ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • experience providing psychiatric care in a correctional environment;
    • experience in psychiatry;
    • experience managing psychiatric conditions as a mid-level provider.

    Conditions of Employment:

    The SD DOC is committed to a work environment free from illegal drugs and alcohol. All job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation, urine drug screen (UDS) and the candidate's ability to perform the essential functions of the position.

    Individuals selected for the position will have the opportunity to carry Oleoresin Capsicum (OC/pepper spray) if desired. If OC spray is carried, the staff carrying OC spay will be required to have direct (level 1) exposure during the training program. Individuals selected for the position must successfully complete a written and practical self-defense exam and successfully complete CPR to AHA guidelines – this includes successful completion of the practical/hands on portion as well as the written exam. Selected individuals must possess the physical ability to successfully complete the practical self-defense exam, which involves the following:

    • lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;
    • stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;
    • use arms, palms of hands, shins, and feet to deliver blows;
    • withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;
    • rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;
    • get down on one or both knees and up again with multiple repetitions;

    Additionally, TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
