Health and Safety Manager monitors the removal of physical, biological and chemical hazards, and training of employees on safety policies, procedures, and regulations. Verifies compliance with health and safety regulations and ensures all necessary records are maintained and prepared according to established guidelines. Being a Health and Safety Manager manages the participation in Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections, providing inspectors with appropriate documents and identifying safety measures. Ensures projects are completed on time and within budget. Additionally, Health and Safety Manager acts as advisor to health and safety administration team regarding projects, tasks, and operations. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a Manager or Head of a Unit/Department. The Health and Safety Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Health and Safety Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     Our corporate office is in Paso Robles, and we have a secondary office operating in Selma. Our area of work includes the central part of California, the California coast to the Nevada border, from San Jose to Los Angeles, Bakersfield to Sacramento and the Lancaster to Bishop area.

      Responsibilities for the Role

      • Reviewing and revising current safety policies as necessary.
      • Establishing safety performance goals that meet company goals and improvement.
      • Allocating sufficient resources to safety and training.
      • Overseeing system performance and modifying policies and goals as necessary.
      • Screen projects and project sites before work commences, identifying safety-related risks.
      • Inspect active project sites to evaluate ongoing work conditions to guarantee compliance.
      • Liaise with external parties such as government-employed inspectors to evaluate the process of construction sites.
      • Work with project management teams and field workers to implement and device solutions to safety-related issues on project sites.
      • Work with senior management to create plans for emergency procedures.
      • Maintain safety related paperwork, including OSHA 300 logs and safety training certifications, such as OSHA OTI.
      • Maintain all incident, accident, warning, First Aid, and Workers Comp paperwork with thorough notes for all upper management.
      • Providing ownership with the proper response to any incident that requires an update to policy, additional training, etc. to help prevent further like incidences.
      • Train company employees on safe work practices and emergency procedures.
      • Discipline subcontractors and employees who fail to comply with minimum safety standards.
      • Represent construction company in meetings with government bodies and other organizations on issues regarding workplace health and safety.
      • Interact with licensed bodies for regular update on legal regulations and program initiatives on workplace safety and environmental issues.
      • Additional administrative duties may be required.
      • Work will be done both in the office and in the field.

      Job Requirements

      • Class A License preferred
      • Ability to operate a “Ten-Wheeler” and tow Equipment Trailer
      • Ability to load and unload equipment (backhoe, skid steer, steel plates, mini excavator, etc.).
      • Hard working with strong work ethic.
      • Able to meet attendance & punctuality requirements.
      • Display endurance, the ability to work in all weather conditions.
      • Comply with drug / alcohol free policy
      • Must be willing to follow all DOT requirements in addition to company requirements
      • Must be willing to travel (Leo Tidwell Excavating Corp. pays for hotels and per diem when out-of-town work is required).

      Job Qualifications

      • High school diploma or equivalent.
      • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Health, Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
      • Minimum, five years’ experience in construction, identifying threats and developing appropriate protection measures.
      • Current certifications in First Aid, CPR, OSHA, 30-hour Construction Safety and Industry Standard plus familiarity with DOE 10 CFR Part 851 preferred.
      • The ability to communicate effectively both written and oral.
      • The ability to listen effectively and receive feedback from the employee perspective without passing judgment.
      • Knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations relating to the specific trade or activity being managed.
      • The ability to maintain good records of all tasks.
      • Preferred experience in underground construction.
      • Good team player, Self-confident, motivated, and independent.
      • Conflict management and problem-solving skills are a must.
      • Capable of maintaining a high level of confidentiality and professionalism in difficult situations.
      • Comprehensive understanding of HR best practices, employee benefits, and state and federal employment laws.

      Physical Demands of the job

      • Push, pull, reach, and carry objects such as tools, materials and equipment weighing up to 90 lbs.
      • Load and unload tools and equipment on truck.
      • Ability to ascend and descend ladders.
      • Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl while performing work.
      • Must be able to stand or walk for long periods of time.
      • Must be able to operate or work around heavy equipment and machinery.
      • Must be able to work in small/confined areas.
      • Must be able to maintain visual and audible contact with other crewman and all moving or stationary persons/vehicles/objects to ensure safe coordination of movement.
      • Must be able to work while wearing safety boots, safety glasses, hardhat, and any applicable safety gear.
